Hi guys I wrote Ships Of Wood back in 1980. The song has Never been performed live. It was produced last year and I plan on putting it on my One Day In A Life CD. What I would like to knowdoes the song sound dated. My CD will be along the line of the Moody Blues and The Alan Parsons Project style of music. On my web site I have two versions a instrumental and one with vocals be sure to select the one with vocals. Thanks for your help. Mild Bill
http://www.songbirdinc.net/song/2/106/a Ships Of Wood | Ships of Wood Poem by Bill WrenLike sea faring vessels We navigate through the ocean of timeIn this incredible world of splendor and beautyBut soon find, not all is as it seems When the cold wind of adversity blows And our very foundations are rocked by roaring wavesYet in some of us there is a compelling passion To seek truth, understanding and reasonAnd we are willing to risk all to find itAs in the days of old when men of renownSearched for new and distant landsIn their ships of woodShips Of WoodShips of wood sail the open seasSheets are full as the cold wind blowsMen of hopes and dreams a new life they seekPray to God above their souls He'll keepTheir souls He'll keepTheir souls He'll keepTime to rest now sleepDream of a land so far awayDream of a place where you can stayShips of wood sail the open seasSheets are full as the cold wind blowsAs the cold wind blowsAs the cold wind blowsNo one really knows There is a land so far away There is a rest where you can stayLand in sight by the morning lightLand in sight what a great delightHere is the place where you can stayHere is the truth it's here todayShips of wood sail the open seas

BILLReminds me alot of my old friend Bryan MacLean who used to be in the Los Angeles-based group "LOVE" in the sixties...He's best known for the tune 'ALONE AGAIN OR'....Bryan passed away Christmas day 1999 but you can check out his web-site and hear the comparisonNice tune , clean recording.......Really, really enjoyed it....Great tune..............I would call it more "time-less" than dated.....

Hi Bill! You know I loved this track, right? I think I mentioned it a couple of times. Your guy sounds great on it, the arrangement is solid. I don't hear any dating (the guitars would give that away and voice effects, things like that but I don't hear any). Weirdly, it reminds me of Josh Groban type stuff but more like Josh Groban in The Golden Compass or Beowulf or something, if that makes sense.Really lovely track, bill. Your biggest fan,Squids

Maybe you should check out Josh's stuff (and singers like him) and write some of that type too......we get listings for that. Ya know, songs about spirituality or uplifting messages. Groban's You Raise Me Up would be an example of that.....although Secret Garden wrote it and did it better......ooh, you should check Secret Garden out too!

It's a nice song Bill.I'm thinking whether it's a song you would expect to hear on an artist's albumreleased in 2008, and I'd say yes.I don't hear anything to make it sound dated.Nice one,Dave.

It had a slight hint of Peter Gabriel at around 2:00 in, when the drums started. I'd have to go with Steve and vote for "timeless" vs "dated".With the light strings weaving in and out, it may lend itself to film too....I think you certainly conjure up the image of "ships of wood".Awesome song...hope to hear more about it in the future!!

May 7, 2008, 8:18pm, squids wrote:...but more like Josh Groban in The Golden Compass or Beowulf or something, if that makes sense...That does make sense; I got the same vibe. Very nice and I don't feel that it's dated either. For 2008, it would really just depend on the artist as far as I'm concerned. I think Devin's right when he says timeless.

Thanks elischumann, SteveAltonian, squids,Geof, davekershaw, devin and last but not least, by a long shot kg. This was the first song I ever wrote it wasn't for anything or anybody but just where I was at the time. I'm not that good of a lyricists and was hoping people wouldn't think the song was about real ships but understand it was a allegory. Plus the song was written before some of you were born that's why I thought it might be dated sounding, or not relevant. The vocalist had to get it right or the song wouldn't work. The first take was not good but after I explained to him what I was feeling when I wrote the song he put some real emotion into it and that alone almost carries it, combined with the Frank Ralls music arrangement. Thanks again to all,and thanks for getting it. Mild Bill
