RETRO SOUNDING COVER of the SONG "HEY JOE," made famous by Jimi Hendrix, is needed by a Music Supervisor for Major Hollywood Studio FEATURE FILM. Please check out the versions of the Song below to wrap your head around the tone, tempo, and vibe that could work for this pitch:

"Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix: http://bit.ly/1hTyq0v

"Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix: http://bit.ly/1e9ALQu

Quoting the Music Supervisor: "I need an authentic sounding version of 'Hey Joe.' It needs to sound cool, like Jimi Hendrix's version. There's just something about the Hendrix version that grabs you right away. The guitar is cool, the vocal is cool, and the bass and drums are cool. It has a loose swagger, a monster rhythm section, with a laid back, but charismatic vocal delivery. It's tough and it's sexy. It's not light or corny at all. That's the feel and vibe that we need for this film."

It's okay to channel your "Inner Jimi" for this pitch! This Film is a period piece that takes place in the early 1970s, the Music Supervisor CANNOT use any covers that sound like they use technology that didn't exist during that era. Michael should engineer this one ;-) It's okay if you have a current recording of "Hey Joe," but it should sound vintage, as if it had been recorded in the late '60s or early '70s. A little tape hiss and saturation on your recording could help to add to this vibe, but be careful NOT to go too far trying to make your recording sound vintage. 1973 is the cutoff for the sound they're looking for. Songs with Male OR Female vocals will both be considered! Broadcast Quality a la late 1960s-1973 is needed (appropriate sounding home recordings will be fine. Break out the analog tape kids!).

Your version should be as close to the Tempo of Jimi's version as possible. You'd be wise to stay within the range of 80-86 BPM. This will help your version fit in with the existing picture edits and the feel that they need for this specific scene. They want Bluesy guitar riffs over a loose Rock band with a vibe that sounds like the anti-establishment, stoned out hippies of that era would think it's groovy. Please do NOT submit anything with synth pads or stiff, MIDI-driven sounds.

The estimated Master License fee is $8,000. This is a Direct-to-Music Supervisor placement, so you'll keep 100% of the fee! There is no publishing because somebody else wrote the song. No performance royalties either. But $8K for a cover version doesn't suck! And you'll retain ownership of your Master recording, so you could potentially license it again for other projects!! All songs will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 listings no later than THURSDAY, March 13th, 2014 by 2pm (PST). TAXI #U140313HJ

Nice R!

Submit.

Funny thing, after listening to your version i went to hear one of the Hendrix links you had provided. Before the video started, there was the obligatory ad. The ad song for, I dunno, Verizon or something, reminded me of how much music mixing has changed. There's been a shift, hasn't there. The emphasis is less on unique, creative, emotive songs and more on slick, clean, hyper produced blasé sweet sounds. Sound trumps song. Ya know? Then the Jimmy video actually started and the sound quality difference was sadly profound. Something lost and something gained in living every day... Am I the only one who find's himself reflecting a little TOO much lately?? It may be a Canadian winter thing...

Your song was great, by the way! Submit!!!!

You're in!

ethan, yeah, should do another master. this got mixed at another studio 20 minutes before taxi deadline, ha! recording was a 3-day marathon...8-part female backing vox, etc.

graham, that is a deep message dude, let's converse on it. for now, will just say we tried to grab the '68 mix vibe, with a touch of kramer verbs/tape saturation and puig compression, etc.
(can't believe i even know how to say that). my personal instruction to the young engineer was, "just mix it wet and lo-fi motherf**ker".

Great version of one of my all time favourites!!!

Your voice sounds a bit more like Tim Rose's version than Hendrix but all the better for that.

Great work.

If that doesn't get a forward I'm going to learn to play guitar with my teeth.

:D :D

Michael.

just got on to share the guitar/amp setup for this, and saw all the nice responses...thanks!

i'm not really a guitar/amp freak, believing instead that you can make a sears silvertone through a montgomery wards amp sound great, but for the tech guys...

i researched the hey joe recording. hendrix used his stock strat through a deluxe reverb with 6L6's, no effects, just the spring reverb at about 7. it just so happened that a fender buddy of mine had a prototype of what later became the hot rod deluxe, with 6L6's, one 12" speaker, painted glossy electric orange with black racing stripes and the HRDX emblem on the grille cloth (see photo). it was designed to match the 1969 AMC Javelin (if anyone remembers that muscle car).

so, we used a stock strat, put the amp in a sound booth on the floor, with a sm57 about 8 inches in front, and a room condenser mic (akg i think) about four feet behind the open back cab and about 4 feet off the floor. rehearsed the opening riff and wow, sounded pretty close to the record!

the right channel lead guitar is the same setup with just a touch of tube screamer.

that's it.

Yes! That guitar tone was stunningly close to the original. Great track! I thought the backup vocals sounded great too.
