TAXI hosting page song LINKS...

First off, I always stress this isn't a complaint. In fact, if TAXI song links were easier to access, I'd probably spend the majority of my time critiquing other people's music because oddly enough, I learn from doing that. I just want to fix the problem. My husband spent an evening trying to figure out what was wrong. On some occasions, even if I can get into the TAXI page, I click 'play' and it will come up "Internet explorer can't display this page.' Most of the time, I can't even access the links here, and the same message from Internet explorer will appear. Some people have offered to help me like Antonio, but I am not computer saavy enough to understand what they may tell me. This is why I had my husband work on the problem ....he's very good with computers, but we still couldn't make the links work. I know others have had this problem here as well. Is there anyway TAXI can remedy this problem?Pretty please? Yeah, I can call customer service, but I wouldn't know where to begin to fix the problem....even if they tried to guide me through it....I know if my hubby can't do it, I sure will have a hard time.

I usually get sent to taxi's main page from someone's link. That's why I use broadjam to post links now. Hope they find an answer!

The only things I can think of is to first, make sure your mp3 player is up to date, and second, try Firefox to see if it works there. At least if it works in Firefox, you'll know it's an IE problem. If you've already tried those, I'd try installing another mp3 player, like winamp, Itunes or something similar, and make it the default for streaming mediaGood luck

I've got iTunes. Some links work directly with it, others lead me to the main page. Must be something in how they type it out, I guess. Dunno.

I don't think it's you, it's how the people copy and paste the links. It works every time if I go to "My Music" RIGHT-CLICK on the PLAY button of the song I want to link to and copy the link (or whatever language your OS uses, I'm on Mac). Then paste the link directly in to the post and it works every time. Some folks may be missing a step.If TAXI added a button that made it easier to copy the link, it may alleviate this issue. Since people are doing this linking a lot, the added functionality would be welcome. It's not like they have anything to do at TAXI anyway, right Mazz

There may be several problems coming into play here and I'm not sure Taxi can do much about them. The first thing is that people posting links do usually make mistakes. Just talking about the Taxi hosting here, the most common mistake I've seen is linking to a song that hasn't been marked as "Public". When people do that you get the message that your browser cannot open the page requested. That is not a problem with the browser, people just need to make sure they mark songs as "Public" if they want other people to hear them. The next thing that could be preventing you from listening from the Taxi pages is security. The Taxi page does not link you directly to a file, it links to a URL that executes a script that returns the sound file. Sorry that last sentence may not make sense to non-techies. Essentially there is an intermediary, you asked for a loaf of bread but instead of sending you to the bakery, I'm sending you to the corner store that sells the stuff the bakery made this morning. Some browsers and some media players will restrict this type of "re-direction" under some security policies. To test if this is your problem try the following links:Method 1Method 2The first one is the link as most people use it. That is the link to the script instead of linking to the actual file. The second one is the link to the actual file. If the second one works and the first one doesn't then you may have a problem with your security settings. The following is for geeks only:Another security problem that may play a part here is that the audio is being streamed on a non-traditional port (8888) so if there is a firewall that only allows http traffic on the traditional ports (80/443) that could be stopping this from working.Last but not least, this could simply be an issue of speed. If you internet connection is slow or unreliable, it could prevent you from streaming the audio correctly. The songs on the taxi hosting page are streamed instead of you downloading a file to play locally. Think of that as the difference between listening to the radio and carrying a CD with you. Streaming audio over the net is like listening to the radio: you need your receiver and the ability to receive the signal over the airwaves. If you live up in the mountains, your reception may be bad or non-existing. Similarly with streaming audio, if your connection is slow or unreliable, you won't get the signal fast enough or won't get all of the necessary pieces to hear that audio file. Downloading an mp3 and playing locally is like carrying a CD, you don't have to worry about your FM Radio reception, you just put it on and play it (assuming you have a CD player, or mp3 player in the virtual example). If this is the case then nothing Taxi or the people posting a link can do will help you. A few questions to see if we can help you:- What browser are you using? Is it IE, Firefox, Safari, other?- What media player do you usually use to play sound files? - Can you play an mp3 file you've downloaded to your hard-drive without a problem?- What kind of internet connection do you have? Is it dialup, cable, DSL?I'll be happy to help get this figured out. Maybe we could come up with a set of tips for posting links to your music and post them under a different thread for everyone to read.Antonio

Hey Antonio......cool security check! Both worked for me so I guess in my case it's typos that send me either to the main page or to a page that doesn't load......I'm guessin' it's something else for chits.....Thanks a bunch for taking the time to set that up. Neat! You da man!

One thing that's not consistant which adds to the "Eye-Dee-Ten-Tee" error (see below for definition) is that we access and upload our music is on the taximusic.com domain name yet when we reference our page to the "outside world" we reference it through the taxi.com domain name (i.e
www.taxi.com/fredsmith).An "Eye-Dee-Ten-Tee" is my favorite error code that gets thrown whenever a user is screwing things up. Written out it looks like this:ID10T

Thanks so much for all your advice, Mazz, David, and Antonio. It's much appreciated. And thanks to Squiddy too.Antonio, I will answer your questions: The browser I'm using is IE.The media player I'm using is Windows.Yes, I can play an mp3 file one it's downloaded to my hard drive....no problem there.I am on dial-up, but I will be getting DSL come December. My husband did disable the Window's Vista firewall, but it didn't work. He also disabled a McAfee firewall, but that didn't work as well. Thanks once again for all you guys help.

www.taximusic.com/hosting/home.php?artist=fredsmithSo you could use the taximusic.com address, it's just shorter and more convenient when you are giving the address to someone to use the taxi.com version.
