Feedback from instrumental cue writers?

Hi All,

I'm a long-term Taxi member but (to my shame) pretty new to the Forums. I'm mainly working on instrumental tracks/cues and aiming at TV/media, etc. markets. I'd be really interested in getting some feedback from other members of the Taxi community with experience in working in this area on some of my stuff.... The track listed here as an example is an instrumental rock track:-

I do appreciate the time taken to listen..... and any thoughts/suggestions, especially anything that you think might need some work to make it more 'friendly' for a library submission or music supervisor, would be gratefully received.

With thanks and very best wishes,

John

Hi John,

Welcome to the forums. Nice track. Is there a particular listing you are going for?
I like what you are doing with the guitars and how they build into the 'chorus'. Getting more presence in them would be a plus.
The production all seems a little too weak for me. Nothing is really hard-hitting - the percussion in particular. I want that snare to slam down and cut through everything.
At the moment its kinda just bouncing on top. The Bass also needs to come up.
Good work.

Hi Daftdog,
I like what I've heard. I have similar comments to SteveBaruah. I struggle myself with trying to get my Guitar Rig to sound like its coming through a real amp. I get the same feeling listening to the guitars. I could be wrong, since I'm using ear buds. :|

But hey, I'm nit-picking here it's a good effort. 8-)

The closest to a guitar based rock cue from me is called Home Coming on my TAXI page (click the yellow icon below)

Hi Steve/Fuzzbox.....

thanks for the feedback. It's really helpful to get some fresh ears on stuff once you have already heard it too many times.... :-) Steve - I'm off to push the drums a bit harder....

Thanks again and very best wishes,

John

I agree with Steve -- nice track, but the drum kit ought to be hitting harder. Some parallel compression on the drum kit (not cymbals) might do it. When the guitar comes in at 0:28 that ought to be harder, with the drums harder.

Hi John.
Nice track and drum comments already said.
I like the guitar lines you have going on and the synth swirls moving around. Sounds like a Les Paul (?) but how did you record it?
Good luck with the track.
Cheers/Steve

Hi Steve,

thanks for taking the time to listen and the kind words - always appreciated. For information, the guitars were recorded via a Line 6 Helix (various different patches) and are a mix of humbucker-based things - including a Les Paul :-) Thanks again for the feedback... and very best wishes, John

Nice writing but the drums are not powerful enough when the chorus comes in.

Hi CosmicDolphin,

thanks for the taking the time and the feedback.... Everyone who has been kind enough to comment has pretty much agreed.... Guess I better work on those drums then :-)

Thanks again and very best wishes,

John
