Hi folks... It's been a while... summer is keeping everyone busy, but we have a couple of news songs we're trying to put the finishing touches on. Ths one is called, "Our Last Chance" and is in that classic rock genre we're so stuck in. We'd love, as always, to get your thoughts and suggestions...You can listen in your default player by clicking here:http://www.soundclick.com/util/streamm3 ... 356&q=hiOr listen in Sounclick's online player here:http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 26356&q=hi(Change the 'hi' to 'lo' in the URLs for lo-fi versions if necessary)Lyrics:The destruction echoes on, many hearts it shookA stranger appears as everyone stops to lookTragedy fell upon their lives as everyone sleptThe future destroyed they screamed, cried and wept[Chorus]What did we do with our last chanceDid we just throw it all awayWas this really our last chanceHave we lived our last dayRadicals bent on pushing hate all the wayThe stranger tries to help, he knows what to sayMost don't believe as they've heard it all beforeA little too late they bend their knees and pray[Chorus]What did we do with our last chanceDid we just throw it all awayWas this really our last chanceHave we lived our last day[Bridge]We could have had all we wantedInstead our shortsightedness remained undaunted[Interlude][Solo]Theories run amok with no answers from any manIs he the answer after all or another to fool againHe told them the answers to what they're afterIt was not what they wanted to hearFate had nothing to do with their disasterAnd hate was the cause just as they feared[Chorus]What did we do with our last chanceDid we just throw it all awayWas this really our last chanceHave we lived our last day

Howdy I though the song was vary good. I not much of a critic but I am a rocker. I thought I should say something to you guys about the music, I know how it feels when you want some feedback and you don't get any. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Project (Nice name!), I'm glad you like the tune. Yes, sometimes it's pretty dead over here. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment!

Good coherency between the music and lyric. The vocal works well for me, man. I don't know if it is the headphones on this system or your track, but I hear a pretty constant high-frequency hiss running in the background that takes away a bit from the overall quality. My one criticism is of the bridge. Instead of giving me a changeup, it sort of comes across like the band forgot what song they were playing for a couple of bars (or all changed songs together) and then found it again. I'd like to see a bit of let up on the distorted rhythm (or a change in it) during the chorus, as well. But that is just my short attention span talking.Good job.

I like the song overall. I agree with Travelling Ed, the bridge seems to come out of nowhere, almost like an afterthought. Maybe set it up with a few bars of an instrumental bridge before the vocals kick in to give it a more logical transition. On the recording/mixing side of things, I felt the hihat and ride stuck out too far in front and were way too bright for the style of music you are playing (mainly the hihat, the ride to a lesser degree). Everything else sounds nice and heavy down to the Slayer-type mixing on the guitars and the high-end accents on the bass drum (very "...And Justice For All"-like) but the hi-hat sounded more Backstreet Boy-ish to me (just the EQ and mix placement, not the playing, the playing is nice and heavy). If you purposedly added some highs on that EQ, I would bring it down a notch. If that's how they sound naturally, I would cut off the high-end just a tad. Very nice track though.Antonio

Wow. A tremendous amount of work must have gone into this. Good mix too - did you mix yourself or send away?I thought the ratio between the kick and the snare was out - the kick really poked through, the snare a bit lost for me.I also thought the ratio between the kick and the bass gtr was out. Couldn't really hear the bass but I know MP3s squash the bottom end. Finally I thought that (sonically) the first part of the first gtr solo and the finger tapping part were fine but the bit between them (from 2.36 to 2.43) sounded lost all of a sudden. Like someone had hit reverb-plus.However, for the genre (which I incidentally know nothing about) it's hard to fault this work without nitpicking.Liamwww.myspace.com/liamkellymusic

Thanks everyone for the replies... I'll try to address most of the points brought up in this reply.Ed, you're the first to mention a hiss on the track. I've listened again and I don't hear anything. Maybe it was the headphones? I'll keep checking on these end using some different equipment. The bridge: It's funny... I almost find the bridge too similar to the rest of the song, not like it's out of nowhere. But, you two make good points. I'll revisit it and see if I can improve on the transition there. And again.. the chorus is indeed very similar to the rest of the song. It could use a different hook or something to set it off a bit.Antonio, if I recall correctly, I didn't really do to much EQ on the hats at all. After listening again, I can hear what you're saying. I'll try darkening them up a bit.liamkelly, this song indeed had a lot involved. More so than most of our songs. But it was done the same way as all. Everyone sending their parts to me from 5 different locations around the globe and then I do the final mix/master in Adobe Audition. As for the bass, it's partly because of the MP3 and partly because I still struggle getting a good bass sound/mix. I'll revisit it too and see if I can bring it out a bit. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to listen and comment! I appreciate the kind words... I'll pass them along to everyone involved.

Hey Steve, you probably know this, but just in case, compressing the bass a little will give it more punch without making it "louder".

I know it has helped me a lot in mixing bass tracks lately.Antonio

I've been reading, experimenting and everything thing else I can do to get the 'right' compression on the bass for a while now. It really seems to vary from song to song and it's been hit and miss for me to this point. Maybe the article Antonio mentions will be the one that turns the light on in my head.
