hey folks,
After about a year of steady songwriting and about nine months of occasional cue production I have lots of songs and cues. Many are finished, and some still need work.
My main question is, how do you organize and keep track of your finished product?
how do you keep track of what you've submitted, to whom, ETC?
I know there is software for this music business stuff. what does the community recommend and use?

Any tips and suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Rusty,

I usually just put a copy of the finished tracks in a folder (on the computer) that is named after the show or library they are used for. i.e..... Big Time Library Exclusive ... (etc) .


Simple and effective.

So glad I set it up from day 1..been tweaked a little along the way. It has tabs as well , one for each Library but showing the names would be against the forum rules. My main co-writer has edit rights access as well. With it being a Google App we can both access it across all devices.

I wish I would have added a column with the key of the track on. Apart from that I think it's all good.

Everything is colour coded too, purple are signed to non-ex libraries, yellow is for exclusive, green is finished but unsigned, orange is work in progress.

Composer Catalog is fantastic. Highly recommend it. I used it diligently for awhile, until I stopped. No complaints at all - I just forgot to use it for a little while and when I remembered, the idea of going back and entering data on dozens of cues kept me from doing so.

Now I just use a google sheet. I pretty much only submit to exclusive libraries, and the ones that aren't I treat as exclusive. So I don't really need to keep much info honestly, just title and who signed it. Don't really need all the info of the piece like the tempo, key, metadata, etc because once it's signed it's signed exclusively. I also have another column on this sheet for unsigned tracks and another for taxi submissions with their current status. Pretty simple but works for my needs.

I label all my sessions in a way that makes it very easy to find what I need too, "year-month-day_publisher_brief_number of track in brief_title of track" - for example "2019-01-13_Publisher_Show name_01_Cue Title". I also have another sheet that I put together full of metadata keywords which comes in handy.

there's some attraction for the simplicity of a spreadsheet like a google sheet.
I really do like the idea of Composer Catalog though because it's so inclusive.
I guess I'll have to make a decision some time.


I do like the idea of naming projects well and also depositing masters in to specific directories for each library.
But the beauty of being able to search for a track by any number of characteristics is really cool!
