Haven't been on the forum for a while but hoping to get some general feedback...

Just finished writing and recording a new song called "Tryin''. It's not for a Taxi listing ...it's for a music supervisor who wants a classic rock sounding song (70's to 80's influenced) with some contemporary phrasing elements. Here is the TAXI link:.

Hey John,

The vocals may be too upfront for TV. I can hear the reverb on the vocal but somehow it isn't sounding right to me. Maybe a pre-delay setting?

The mix overall is too compressed/limited IMO

The song has kind of a 60's and 80's sound if that makes sense. The music sounds 60's while the melody is 80's?

I'm no expert for sure, there's people here with much better ears and advice than me

Cool track. It doesn't hit me at all as classic rock. I agree with Dave that it sounds like a 60s song with an 80s approach or a mix of too many decades. I would NOT send this to a music supervisor looking for classic rock. It could have its place elsewhere, but IMHO not here.

Thanks Dave and Casey for your comments. Interesting how people hear different things...also had 2 PM's saying the song sounded like something from an AOR radio station, ala, The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Police.

While classic rock by definition is hard rock ranging from the mid-1960s to mid-1990s, it seems to have a wide variety of sub-genres....

Yea, "classic rock" covers a wide range no doubt. This link might help:

I don't know how well you know this music sup but when it comes to pitching directly to a sup, I'm always much more careful about pitching on target. Pitching off target isn't the best way to start a relationship.
