Aiming to make a final mix of this one:
original concept and lyrics (c) by Dave Amaditz
co-written, and music by Peter Rahill
The ENSEMBLE
lead vocal: Marion Laird (aka Merry, Marion Faith/Merryband1)
live strings: Kurt Baumer (FiddletraX.com)
ukulele bass, acoustic guitars, synth strings and recorder: Peter Rahill
BGVs: Joe Kane & Peter Rahill

mix comments welcome... for now, anyway.
:? 8-)

EDIT 7-20-22: track removed for renovation

Vocals are too loud, they are sitting in front of the music instead of being part of it. Probably due to spectral masking if you feel you can't hear the lyrics if you pull the fader down.

Try turning the vocals down until they are all but inaudible , then find the right frequencies to cut in your other tracks so your vocal starts poking back through again. Then turn them back up to the right level. Or just cheat and get Trackspacer.

The worst thing is there's quite a lot of sibilance on the esses in the lead vocal to a point where it's quite distracting. I think I can hear some artifacts of de-essing because sometimes it sounds like the singer has a lisp.

If it's inherent in the raw recording you can only do so much and sometimes it's better to track the singer with a different mic or a different mic technique. Or...You can painstakingly chop out ever "ess" sound off every word, move it to another track , route it to avoid any vocal FX like compression and reverb/delay and and pull the level of the esses right down to a manageable level.

Backing vox are a little pitchy too I would get the lead singer to replace them.

Hi Peter,

Just wanted to point out a noise at 3:08, it sounds like a manual punch in that got recorded through a mic or something else.

Well... we're gonna find Manuel, and fire him for that.

Thanks.

Hey Peter Purty for sure. I have no mixing talent and also failing ears. To me, the background instruments were too loud? Unlike at 2:58 (I think) her voice could breathe and the background was less. You really want to hear every word on a song like this. Sounds like you wrote the lyrics. congrats

Actually, the original lyrics were by TAXI member Dave Amaditz. (credits there in my original post).
Thanks for the 'feedback'.
:? Try listening to the playback at really low volume. 8-)

Thanks, all, for the suggestions.
