Hey Davrom,

It sounds like a good mix to me until you add more instruments, it's sounds like what I tend to do... have too many instruments up front. I don't do it anymore but it wasn't very long ago when I did. When certain things come in, such as the Flute... (I think it is a flute but it is awfully low for a flute... definitely a wind instrument) ...then the bongos it gets a bit crammed and I don't know what to focus on as a listener. I would like to have the guitar move back into the mix a little and them take center stage when they come in OR have them as backing and not so upfront when they join in. I prefer they take center stage then release it to the next new instrument... That would sound way cool and more pro. imho

Your mix is good though so please take this as being extremely nit picky.

This is a great track, reminds me of the ‘Thomas Crown Affair’ (original) sound track. I love the beautiful intertwining Oboe (French Horn?) line. Most of what I would suggest comes down to taste.

Have you considered beat syncing the filter on the firsts synth against the guitar intro? It seem a little machine harsh against the organic of the nature of your fantastic guitar playing. Maybe consider a ‘tube’ plug-in just to warm it – plenty of free ones around.

Piano is too loud for me, I realise in the hierarchy of instruments it appears foreground then recedes to the mid-ground. I’m just wearing ear buds so perhaps it is not so when through speakers, but the piano could also be panned a bit further left?

Even though it is orchestration, you might want to consider putting the cello/bass in the centre, as it will give the piece weight, but also the right side is very busy. Pull the conga over more to the left near the main guitar then I think spatially it will be more defined.

I don’t feel that the instruments are in one place. You needs some unifying reverb on the final out and perhaps some light EQ & very light compression just for character and to unify.

Rob, i have a hard time with balances. i wish i could write, record and then put it away for a month to get some objectivity before mixing. it shouldn't be so difficult but... anyway, it's nice to be able to post here and get comments like yours. i totally agree with your ideas.

i did not think of syncing the filter. nice one. although i hope the little noise stays random, i like that (bump in the night and all that). i was after some subtle randomness so i didn't use strings

it did start out too loud, especially on the 1st few notes, i fixed it

indeed, i've been thinking of that cuz i want to center the low parts. but, i'm listening to a lot tv/film stuff and the basses are always on the right. that's my target anyway. the conga is not as critical

like balance, this is another aspect i have trouble with. i'll try running it thru Ozone's reverb. also, i have a fairchild plugin on the mixbuss, maybe need to push it a little more
