Is this track in the Ambient/Chill genre?

Post by kclements » Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:27 am

Hello Chaps!

Got a call yesterday for an ambient/Chill piece. This genre is a bit new to me, so I could use your opinions. Does it work? anything missing? To sparse, not sparse enough?

What do you think?

Thanks as always.

hey kayle,

its cool, maybe a little on the New Agey side for me. my concept of Ambient / Chil-tronica is a little more edgy maybe, striking sounds. Love to hear what the consensus is though.

Hi Kayle

This is a cool track but I kinda agree with the other comments. I would put this more in a New Agey kinda category than chill/ambient. If you're not being given any al a's than I would do some searching on you tube and such to hear how other classify chill/ambient

Good luck

Kayle,

I think this could work if it had a different drum part. Listen to groups like Thievery Corporation and Zero 7 and Air. I think your beat is a bit too "jazzy". Most of the Ambient Chill music surprised me when I heard it because while it may have been Ambient, it certainly felt more like dance music with ambient stuff over the top, in other words, I had to recalibrate my definition of ambient to include that genre in it. You are still thinking that Ambient means Ambient, like in the Eno sense. Now it's broader than that.

You can do it, an easy fix, IMO with a little research.

I drove thousands upon thousands of miles across this country all the while listening to "Chill" on XM Radio, and you'd be surprised what they consider "chill" now. It's everything from smooth jazz to electronica and everything in between. This genre (like many others) used to be well defined but not anymore. I heard a track the other night that had an electric jazz-fusion guitar solo in it that lasted 8 minutes!

Your track definitely falls within the parameters but is completely subjective to the end user...

Thanks everyone.

I did listen to some Chill/downtempo stuff on Pandora before doing this. Seems like a really big genre with lots of variation. I will do some more research and keep writing.

Thanks again -

Cheers -
