Disagree with Introspective returns.

Post by Paulie » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:48 pm

I'm bringing this up to help myself and others better understand the listing descriptions as they relate to any a la's provided.

Listing:
INTROSPECTIVE, CONTEMPORARY UNDERSCORE CUES are needed by a NON-Exclusive Music Library that’s supplying music directly to a hit HBO TV Series. They’re searching for tension-based, subtle, well-crafted Instrumental Underscore Cues that would generally fall into the documentary-style category of the references below: The First 48: (3:54 to 4:15) and (4:23 to 4:40): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eE2uIA8D6Q Vanguard: (18:36 to 19:10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwKqTAq ... qwMVFOH3kl Our America: (9:10 to 9:33): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eY1lB7qLfI Please submit relatively simple Instrumental Cues that deliver a serious, important, quality. Repeating rhythmic electronic elements, interesting light percussion, as well as the addition of rich, current-sounding synth pads will work really well for this pitch. Your submissions should revolve around a central melodic theme, and use the addition and subtraction of layered instruments to maintain interest from start to finish. Submissions should be approximately 90 seconds in length. Non-faded endings with a natural decay/ring out are recommended. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). This Library offers a NON-Exclusive 50/50 deal. You’ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher will get 50% of any sync fees and 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control your Master and Composition to submit to this pitch. You maintain full ownership of the original Copyright and Master Recording. Please submit one to three Instrumental Cues online or per CD no later than 11:59PM (PDT) on Sunday, October 18th, 2015. Soundcloud is crapping out today so if you want to listen the tracks are on my Taxi music page.

Feedback: Lost Runaway

So, to quote the listing for this pitch, Paul, "Your submissions should revolve around a central melodic theme". Though this track is wonderfully introspective, atmospheric, well-crafted, etc., I can't say there's really a thematic takeaway to hang one's hat on.

Practically EVERY listing includes the "central melodic theme" line. It's an obvious copy/paste entry, along with the "don't rip off the artiest", "broadcast quality needed" and "submit to three cues online or per CD..." Here's my gripe: Neither of the two a la's provide has any semblance of a theme in the time windows provided (the third a la was taken down from YouTube). So, listening to the a la's and following the "Repeating rhythmic electronic elements, interesting light percussion, as well as the addition of rich, current-sounding synth pads will work really well for this pitch." descriptor. I thought I nailed the style.

Feedback: The Search

More of a melodic element but this cue just didn't really hold my interest as much as "Lost Runaway", which I actually found quite engaging. Almost wish you submitted some kind of mash up of the two. Not at all bad, but not quite right.

So when the a la's don't match the description do we go withe the boilerplate listing text? Should I start submitting my tracks on CD? ;-)

I truly appreciate the feedback, I'm just a little confused by it. That's all for now.

I know, Paulie. Some of the listings and feedback can really be a head scratcher. When you see "central melodic theme" in one line, and then "avoid being repetitious" in the next, you see you have a very fine thread of the whole spectrum that works.

Sometimes the "central melodic theme" in the a las isn't really a melody as much as it is a rhythm or feel. I listened to the a las presented here, and you are right in that they lack a real melody. I had a forward on this one, and the track I submitted does have a pretty distinct melody line to it, which is pretty different than the refs. I'm not really sure what to make of it.

Maybe some of the more experienced guys can chime in with something more helpful.

Yeah, I think it's the missing central melodic theme that got you... both are nice atmospheric cues, almost soundscape in nature. For another time, another listing. So does central melodic theme mean something you can whistle after a listen?? :)
