Got a return on this one for the reason: "Emotional tone is on the mark, but I feel production would need more fresh/cutting edge values to work for this pitch." Can anyone enlighten me on what they mean exactly? Thanks.

CHILL, ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTALS with an Ambient and Cinematic feel are needed by a successful, NON-Exclusive, Boutique Music Library for a new Documentary Series. They’re looking for Down-to-Mid-Tempo Instrumentals that fit within the general range, style, and vibe of these references we got directly from the client: “Never Lose Your Smile” by Exist Strategy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNAF-iWabvw “West” by River Tiber ft. Daniel Ceasar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRYl7J31rrg “Horizon Aura” by Exist Strategy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUMOJAzdGJs Although some of the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals only for this pitch. Give them minimal, laidback Electronic Instrumentals that have a contemporary style with subtle synths and percussion. Your production should have electronic Instrumentation that’s fresh and creative, and should sound like something you would hear on a hip, electronic radio station. Please avoid sounds or parts that are too bombastic or frenetic, as it could interfere with a scene’s dialogue.

Hi David.
I don't know "chill"; don't do cues; and didn't listen to the ref tracks.
I did listen to the opening bits of your track, and immediately it reminded me of
"Lady In Red"

So - perhaps - somewhere in relationship to the age of that piece, may lie the answer to the Screener's comments.
Hope that helps - do you hear the similarities? OR - is it just MY old-guy ears that are stuck in the past?! :? 8-)

Here's how I'd break it down based on the examples. Both first and last listing examples have a touch of Hip-Hop percussion elements. That most likely is what they're referring to. Notice how several of the examples in the YouTube link below have Hip-Hop style rhythms:

To me, Chillstep, Chillwave, etc., are all in the same basket of 'Chill' music, laid back, smooth, relaxing, can still have some up-tempo rhythms in the top while bottom is slower (like with bass & kick), lot of trade off between instruments to keep interest, smooth synths not harsh (roll off high end).
