Yamaha G2 piano mistaken for synthetic piano (Reviewer #399)

Hi Reviewer #399

I love all reviews, even the returns. I try very hard to learn from them. But I have to say that I was disappointed that the critique for Opportunity Y180721MP concluded that my I needed a higher quality synthetic piano when I recorded the track Hermitage using my beautiful Yamaha G2 grand piano. Maybe it was my recording technique? I realise the opportunity said no obviously synthetic instruments, but I wouldn't have thought this would apply in this case. I don't mind returns, but can't understand this particular one. (I can even pick out the slightly flat G below middle C, which I've since had corrected with tuning).

Anyway, onto the next opportunity, eh?

Hi Steven,

Could you post a link to the track?

Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim

I’m never sure how to post from the Taxi hosting area. But my URL is taximusic.com/Stevenharris and the title of the track is Hermitage. (Note: there are some other tracks I’ve recorded with a virtual instrument, but this one def real).

Happy to hear what you think.

Steven

Thanks SubRivers!

Hey Steven,
The high notes in the beginning may be the trouble...I think it's the high A note.
It sounds very piercing with headphones on and sound kind of fake.... maybe??? ( my best guess!)
The same when it plays a little later in the piece,

The rest certainly sounds real to me.... very nice.

Tim

Here is the link to the post on the Taxi Forwards Blog including some links to some of the successful pieces:

http://blog.taxi.com/forward/082018/

You had another piece forwarded - so the piano sound isn't so much the issue IMO as it is nailing the brief: MINIMALIST, EMOTIONAL PIANO INSTRUMENTAL CUES

Listen to all the forwards and see which ones sounded like forwards vs. Hermitage.

sometimes the screener will write something which seemingly doesn't make sense, but IMO you can still A/B against successful pieces and try to reverse engineer what happened.

Nice pieces at any rate! Congrats on the forward!

... and thanks Tim for listening. Maybe it's the EQ on the recording (try not to do too much) or event the compression (again I try not to use too much). Appreciate the thoughts and the feedback. Cheers, Steven
