the Listing:

D120207SR

ORIGINAL SURF ROCK SONGS and INSTRUMENTALS a la The Beach Boys, The Ventures, Dick Dale, to more contemporary-sounding bands a la The Mermen, The Aqua Velvets, Messer Chups, etc., needed by a Worldwide Independent Music Publisher for a variety of placements in popular television shows, movies and other entertainment media. While he is open to the OLD-SCHOOL type surf tunes of the past, he is also open to more contemporary SURF-INFUSED INDIE ROCK a la “Floating Vibes” by Surfer Blood and “Boyfriend” by Best Coast. As always, DO NOT rip-off or copy the referenced artists in any way, shape or form. Use them ONLY as a guide for tempo, texture, and vibe. QUOTED BY THE PUBLISHER: “A ‘Wet’ spring reverb type guitar sound that provides the perfect beach element to a song is what I’m after, both old-school and contemporary.” Top-Notch vocal and instrumental performances needed. MALE and FEMALE vocals accepted. NO COVERS, ORIGINAL MATERIAL ONLY. If you submit songs with lyrics, please make sure they are UNIVERSAL and don’t include names, places, dates, etc. Broadcast quality is needed (excellent home recordings are fine.) Hi Andy,

Scratching my head on these. They sound right on to me. Even down to the shaking of the spring reverb in the second one. - Roger

Not sure what to say either.
My submission ( Hang Tentatively ) was returned too.
I'm assuming the screener had something specific in mind.

Andy-

Just SMH- really.
I just listened to the surf track- thats what they asked for.

Ive already sent a letter to Taxi explaining to them that these sorts of one-off rejections are just awful-
and are in no way helping or cultivating talent-
IMO- there is a better way to do this...

PS- Im sure a bunch of people hate me for saying something negative about Taxi but I gotta be honest.

Hi Andy,

I would have thought that was a shoe-in for a forward. The thing that comes to mind would be that he really was looking for the 2nd references?....even though that's not how I read the ad.

"he is also open to more contemporary SURF-INFUSED INDIE ROCK a la “Floating Vibes” by Surfer Blood and “Boyfriend” by Best Coast"

The thing is that it had to 90-99%+ on target.....it would be nice if they could give more information on what 1-10% they had issues with.

If you ever unlock the seemingly "secret" missing piece you are going to a steamroller on these ads with your playing and writing being so strong.

Keep at it!

hey Richard - that might be it. I guess what I have sort of learned in the last few months is there is more to the briefs than I can imagine. Its an art learning what old school elements people are looking for vs. what new school things (mix maybe? vocal reverb or loack thereof) people seem to be looking for without stating it explicitly. Lots of learning going on here.

salty - there might be a better way but I wasn't under any illusion that this tune was going to get a full critique, i read the listing. at any rate.... moving forward again.
