Haven't posted for a while but I wondered what mid-tempo means in the context of cocktail/jazz?

I was looking at a comping jazz trio at 110BPM. Googling reveals that Jazz may be a little faster?

A-List MUSIC SUPERVISOR working on a MAJOR NETWORK, HIT TV SERIES needs LIGHT PIANO-based INSTRUMENTALS for background source music to play in high society cocktail party scenes. Don't go sad or emotionally dark on this pitch.

This Music Supervisor is thirsty for light, airy, and sophisticated (but not musically complicated) Instrumentals; the type of track that's like a glass of fine champagne. She doesn't want anything too strong or with a bitter after taste. Your tune should be melodic, but not overly complex. Make sure to leave plenty of room for the dialogue.

Small Jazz ensembles ARE encouraged, but if you have a Solo Piano piece with the perfect feel it will also be considered. Please don't submit anything that's over produced or too "slick" sounding. The music has to sound as though it's being performed live at the party. Mid-Tempo pieces will work best for this pitch. All Instrumentals need to be at least 90 seconds long.

I often have the same question! I'm thinking of submitting something at 110bpm too. We shall see....

110 seems to me to be at the top end of "mid" tempo.

But a lot of times I think it really has to do with the feel... depending on how you construct the track, in that mid-tempo range, it can feel Up or Down.

Not much music can be quantified by the numbers... it's all about feel.

Edit: I'm planning on submitting an 85 BPM for this listing... now I'm worried it may be too laid back.

On Anything is Possible I played a Yamaha P80 Stage piano. Drums and upright bass are real and are played by members of my group.
What I Love about you was done with Logic pro. I played all parts using a midi keyboard. I used the Drum Core 3 loops for the drum part (which I purchased at the Road Rally!).

My submission was actually 120, but I think it still sounds mid-tempo. It's on my taxi page and is called 'Champale'.

Mus1 and jonnybutter - you guys have assembled some really great tunes! I can absolutely see myself having cocktails to these tracks playing in the BG. Nice job.

Thanks Trevor! I left all of the timing 'errors' in my piece to retain the live sound.

One thing I've struggled with in these sorts of listings is walking that line between interesting-enough and too busy. I've had a few piano trio pieces intended for source material returned because the screener thought they were too busy. It's a hard line to find when the listing calls for a melody and sophistication, as this one does. We shall see.
