I'm a bit perplexed as to what the difference is between Surf Rock (The Ventures, The Safaris) and Modern Surf Rock (Insect Surfers, Surfer Joe)
Listing S200609SR.
Maybe I'm just not listening deeply enough to hear any difference, with the exception of the production being cleaner. Same type of drum beats, same reverb guitars.
Could someone shed some light on this listing for me?

Thanks,

Harry

You pretty much figured it out. It's mainly how it's recorded/mixed/mastered. Modern Surf Rock has a much bigger sonic range (it actually has discernible bass, lol), and modern production techniques are used to make it sound current vs something from when surf rock was a big deal. The approach to the instrumentation and feel are for the most part the same in my opinion.

I just listened to the three ref tracks, and I've come to the same conclusion. Modern production, and maaaybe a nod here or there to stylistic or guitar techniques developed since the golden age of surf. The anachronisms are probably unintentional!

Otherwise, surf rock is surf rock

So then I suppose I can modernize the bass, and re-mix/master the surf tune I have, which has been forwarded in the past, and hopefully they don't come up with a reason to reject it...
Thanks for the input!
