Instrumentals - melody voice substitute

Q1: When the listing gives an example for an instrumental that has voices and wants a melody (not ambient), do you basically write a topline? A simple one? Leave the bed pretty bare?

Q2: When the timbre of a voice in an otherwise instrumental listing seems to be significant in defining the groove or feel of the genre, what works for you? Do you stay with the instruments in the genre, do you add a similar breathy or vocoder-ished synth? Something else?

I'm pretty sure you're not alone in having these questions. I wish we had a Taxi TV episode that explored all the ways to approach this! :?

Yes..use the rhythmic pattern of the vocal to influence how you play
