WHICH WAY SHOULD I GO?

So...I'm sittin' at the Creation Station listenin' to some Marcus Miller, right?, tryna' figure out how to approach this listing:JAZZ SONGS and INSTRUMENTALS a la the range of Bob Baldwin, Marcus Miller, Najee, etc., needed by the President/CEO of a Sports Training Music Website. Tracks (with vocals and without) can range in tempo from 60 to 145 bpm. He specifically stated that all tracks must be recorded with a metronome. The compensation for usage of your music is 0.15 cents per download and a artist profile/link on the site. Please submit one to three tracks online or per CD, include lyrics (if applicable). All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Monday, October 5, 2009.Anybody that's familiar with Marcus, knows that he's a pretty busy bass player (playing-wise that is). His bass playing is basically the equivalent of a singer's voice on a track. It's the most dominant instrument you'll hear.My only question is, are they looking for something Marcus Miller-like that's dominant and busy, or something a little smoother & more laid back? Thought I'd check with the rest of you gals/guys & see what your thoughts might be.Just don't wanna spend hours/days puttin' somethin' together only to get returned for being..."too busy". If I knew exactly which way ta' go, that might eliminate some concern. Maybe I should put together a track for each situation? Here's a link to some short (I wish they were longer ) samples of the music that I'm listening to, for those that may be unfamiliar with his style. Just scroll down a bit, and you'll see the entire playlist for this CD.http://www.amazon.com/M%C2%B2-Marcus-Mi ... m_m_1Thanx in advance for any insight/feedback on this. Much appreciated.ibanez468

I'd go for smoother and laid back. Listening to all of the a las a bit, I would suggest an amalgam of all three in the center of the bell curve. If you're going for a bass lead, then keep in in the simpler, melodic side of things. In other words: bass melody a' la Marcus, but in the mood of Baldwin and Najee, which is more smooth, less busy and angular.Just my opinion.Mazz

hmmmmmm.... I'm familiar with Marcus Miller and Najee... agree with Mazz.. a mix but nothing too busy.It sure is tough figuring (I mean guessing) this stuff out! .15 cents.. is there a benefit to submitting for this? exposure? not being a smart-aleck, I 'm just ignorant. It seems pretty low to me. Marlin

That narrows things down quite a bit. Your opinion always matters! That gives me a much better idea of which way to go.Sept 15, 2009, 2:57pm, mfowler wrote:It sure is tough figuring (I mean guessing) this stuff out!Oh, absolutely!! I didn't play this much craps even when I was a kid! But...that's why I'm asking the question, so I can at least cut down on some of the guessing. There's enough folks around here that have been doin' this long enough to know what these screeners & clients are lookin' for, moreso than I.Sept 15, 2009, 2:57pm, mfowler wrote:.15 cents.. is there a benefit to submitting for this? exposure? not being a smart-aleck, I 'm just ignorant. In any event, I'll have another tune to add to the catalogue.

I guess my prediction about some smooth jazz being due was correct!! Not sure if my new tune will work, but maybe it's worth a shot. I have a few more smooth jazz tunes laying around that I could submit after some tweak-age.. good luck on your efforts... happy to listen if you need another set of ears! Marlin
