Button Ending?

What exactly is a track with a Button Ending? I know, this particular listing doesn't want fade outs, but does Button Ending mean no ringing notes at the end at all? Does the song have to come to a complete halt and dead silence after the last note...no ringing cymbal....?I have quite a few songs where the last note just trails off and don't know if they qualify as a button ending. Thanks,Harry

I think a ring-out is legit. I've gotten forwards on pieces with ring-outs. It sounds more natural and if the client accepts the piece and wants to edit it, they usually will.Mazz

Ringouts are fine. You're gonna want to keep them on the short side when the listing specifically asks for button endings (cause in reality, they usually want "real" endings in tv/film listings anyway), i.e. don't use the cymbal from hell that rings for another 20 seconds after the piece is over. But reasonable, natural sounding ringouts are fine.
