Don'tcha just love when a listing asks for "contemporary" music and then proceeds to list a bunch of a las that are at least 15 years old?

This from the latest round of listings (been busy, just getting around to it now):

"CONTEMPORARY POP/ROCK SONGS a la Sugar Ray, Smashmouth, Sublime, etc., needed by a very successful Independent Music Placement company. . ."

Not that I have anything that sounds like any of those guys anyway, but thought I'd just chime in to vent a little.

What seems to really matter in listings is the "a la" list. Genre descriptions overlap and can be vague and confusing.... I agree, these acts are 10-15 years back but I'm really not sure what the bounds of "contemporary" are.

My observation is successful folks just target their tracks to sound like one of more of the "a la" acts. That seems to be the recipe for the secret sauce.

Actually, the listings' alas are not very helpful! I submitted to a listing that asks for music ala - Peter Gabriel, Sting and U2. The screener said that the track that I submitted captured the Peter Gabriel sound beautifully. However, it was 'stylistically off target' . What???
Just what did they want??? Never mind it's what they asked for; exactly!!

I was wondering about the Cee Lo Green or Gnarles Barkley "a las".....same singer. Also the "a las" citing Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt ....these are both groups led by Jay Farrar. I find it amusing and confusing.

I don't see how you could make such a sweeping statement when the overwhelming majority of folks who get forwards on a regular basis will tell you that nailing the 'a la's is the critical component. Your song didn't get forwarded but we don't know the whole story. Just because you didn't get one or more forwards you had hoped for, doesn't make your statement true at all.
