not the opposite of what you want? You want the watch to be fast so that it isn't really time to go. If it were slow you would already be late - or not?

Hi Emily -

It depends on whether the narrator is referring to the actual time or referring to what he wants his watch to SAY it is.

So, in the former scenario, if it is actually 5pm and I'm looking at my watch, and the watch SAYS 5pm, I might want my watch to be FAST (as you say) so that in the real world it's actually 4:50 pm (for example) and I can stay longer.

However, in the latter scenario, it means that I'm looking at my watch and I wish the watch were SLOW because then my watch would SAY 4:50pm instead of 5pm. I know full well 5pm is the actual time, but If my watch is slow, and it reads 4:50 at 5pm when it should read 5, I am basically saying "I wish the watch said 4:50 right now instead of 5pm, because then it would be telling me I had 10 more minutes to stay."

So it could really go either way, depending on your interpretation. I personally think "slow" works better, going hand-in-hand with the desire to "slow down time."
