gitarrero, here is one song that's as wonderful to read as it is to hear... It's also a beautiful example of song craftsmanship (my own personal Genius ) He is anything but a STANDARD LOVE SONG kind of writer... and his creations are above reproach. His music is insightful without confusion spending hours, days and more perfecting each line before commiting it to lyric. If you can find the Jennifer Warnes version of " Famous Blue Raincoat " i promise that she and Leonard will deliver what i consider a near perfect musical experience. Proof that you don't have to confound to be profound. Famous Blue RaincoatBy Leonard CohenIt's four in the morning the end of decemberI'm writing you now just to see if you're betterNew york is cold but I like where Im livingThere's music on clinton street all through the eveningI hear that you're building your house deep in the desertAre you living for nothing nowhope you're keeping some kind of recordjane came by with a lock of your hairShe said that you gave it to herThe night that you planned to go clearDid you ever go clear the last time i saw you you looked so much olderYour famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulderYou'd been to the station to meet every trainBut she never turned up, I mean lili marleneSo you treated some woman to a flake of your lifeAnd when she got home she was nobodys wife.I see you there with the rose in your teethOne more thin gypsy thiefWell, I see jane's awake She sends her regardsWhat can i tell youWhat can i tell youWhat can I possibly sayI guess that I miss youI guess I forgive youI'm glad that you stood in my wayIf you ever come by hereBe it for for jane or for meI want you to know your enemy is sleepingI want you to know Your woman is freethanks for the trouble you took from her eyesI thought it was there for good so I never really triedAnd jane came by with a lock of your hairShe said that you gave it to herThe night that you planned to go clearSincerely, a friendCheers, RanG

Hey RanG, That is the version that Jennifer Warren made popular. On his version LC ends it:"Sincerely, L Cohen" which I always thought was very cool--talk about personalizing a song. He also has the second line of "what can I tell you" as "My brother, my killer."Just to get us back to the original.

One of my favorite lyrics of all time is a song entitled "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Here is a snipett of the lyric:they ask me how I knewmy true love was trueI of course repliedsomething here insidecannot be deniedthey said some day you'll findall who love are blindwhen your heart's on fireyou must realizesmoke gets in your eyesThe guage of this lyric is that it was written in the 1930's by a gent' named Otto Harbach and to this day it still garners new recordings. A timeless message and one of the greatest love songs ever written (my fav' version is by the great blues/jazz singer Dinah Washington). Good topic..........................peace!

Gee, tough question, Martin. But, I'd have to say it's a toss up between "Longer" and "Scarecrow's Dream", both by Dan Fogelberg. "Longer" is, to me, just such a great love song ( Yeah, I'm a sap)."Scarecrow's Dream"?, I'm not quite sure. It is one of the few, maybe the only song in my era played on a harpsichord(sp?).
