Little Jimmy Dickens is 90, the oldest living member of the Grand Ole Opry.
I thought I would write this tribute while Jimmy's still kickin'. It has not been recorded.

Little Jimmy Dickens (Larry W. Jones 01/09/2012) (song#6527)

Little Jimmy Dickens is more than slim pickins'
It’s true, he may be little but he sure is loud
Jimmy Dickens, with that big guitar he’s pickin’
Out Behind the Barn he draws a big country crowd

Little Jimmy Dickens wears a big western hat
And keeping it real country is his legacy
Little Jimmy Dickens, for him I'll go to bat
He fills up the stage at the Grand Old Op-er-ree

Now, Jimmy Dickens is nobody’s Stepping Stone
Cause Jimmy said, Take An Old Cold Tater and Wait
And May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose
When that old Fireball Mail comes rolling down the grade

(instrumental)

Little Jimmy Dickens is more than slim pickins'
It’s true, he may be little but he sure is loud
Jimmy Dickens, with that big guitar he’s pickin’
Out Behind the Barn he draws a big country crowd

Little Jimmy Dickens is a big country star
He’s engraved in the country music hall of fame
So, if you like real country, don’t go looking far
Cause Little Jimmy Dickens is his great big name

Little Jimmy Dickens, cowboy boots a-kickin’
He’s stickin’ to real country songs

Nice song!

I'd try to fit in that he plays a Gibson guitar ...

One line jumps out of this song as a "I need something to rhyme" line: Little Jimmy Dickens, for him I'll go to bat

I think this clanks a little, too:
So, if you like real country, don’t go looking far

... especially since the next line is a lot of fun:
Cause Little Jimmy Dickens is his great big name

I really like the verse with the song title quotes. Clever, and it works really well.

Thank you Mike, for your critique.
Based on your suggestions, I made changes on 3 lines.
Hope this is better.

Little Jimmy Dickens (Larry W. Jones 01/09/2012) (song#6527)

Little Jimmy Dickens is more than slim pickins'
It’s true, he may be little but he sure is loud
Jimmy Dickens, with that big Gibson he’s pickin’
Out Behind the Barn he draws a big country crowd

Little Jimmy Dickens wears a big western hat
And keeping it real country is his legacy
Little Jimmy Dickens has got his act down pat
He fills up the stage at the Grand Old Op-er-ree

Now, Jimmy Dickens is nobody’s Stepping Stone
Cause Jimmy said, Take An Old Cold Tater and Wait
And May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose
When that old Fireball Mail comes rolling down the grade

(instrumental)

Little Jimmy Dickens is more than slim pickins'
It’s true, he may be little but he sure is loud
Jimmy Dickens, with that big Gibson he’s pickin’
Out Behind the Barn he draws a big country crowd

Little Jimmy Dickens is a big country star
He’s engraved in the country music hall of fame
So, if you like real country, you can't raise the bar
Cause Little Jimmy Dickens is his great big name

Little Jimmy Dickens, cowboy boots a-kickin’
He’s stickin’ to real country songs

I like most of the changes, but this doesn't hold together for me:

So, if you like real country, you can't raise the bar
Cause Little Jimmy Dickens is his great big name

Each thought alone seems to work, but the fact the Little is his big name doesn't have much to do with raising the bar.

Well, Hummm... My thought was that the high bar mirrored his great big name.
The Little would be a contrast that led to greatness. I'll have to work on it some more.
Thanks again, and I will welcome any suggestions (and your recording of it).
