You can see the sunlight shinin’ on the steeple,
See the town square full of friendly, happy people
Like it’s nineteen fifty-five and time is standin’ still
But the cashier down at Kroger’s tells a story,
How there’s somethin’ crazy buried at the quarry
And a weird smell at the old abandoned mill
And that grubby loner livin’ under Grover Bridge
Has a stash of stolen cash inside a junkyard fridge
Yeah, small town secrets
Are a part of local hist’ry
Bus boys say the sheriff
Was run out of Corpus Cristi
But those rumors and tall tales
Only add an air of myst’ry
Cos people live and breathe
And love to believe
All our small town secrets
Folks still talk about that purty English teacher,
How they caught her after school beneath the bleachers
Now she’s waitin’ tables down in Lafayette
And a girl at St. Marks needs an operation,
But an intern stole the town’s donations
Cos he’s got a wicked jones for Percoset
The well of whispers in this town runs deep
People taste it in their teardrops when they’re tryin’ to sleep
Yeah, small town secrets
Are a part of southern hist’ry
Barkeeps say the sheriff
Was run out of Corpus Cristi
But those rumors and tall tales
Only add an air of myst’ry
People live and breathe
And love to believe
All our small town secrets
Well, that sweet girl fin’lly had her operation
People think some rich guy made a big donation
O but as a favor to a humble loner
Father Sanchez never has revealed the donor
Yeah, small town secrets
Are a part of U.S. hist’ry
Barbers say the sheriff
Was run out of Corpus Cristi
But those rumors and tall tales
Only add an air of myst’ry
People live and breathe
And love to believe
