Roses On the RoofPam walks up to her apartment, puts her groc’ries in the fridgeShe spoils her old calico cats, as if they were her own kidsThere’s a plastic rubber tree plant, over by her tv trayReal plants can’t grow by neon, from the theater ‘cross the wayWell, she lets her hungry kitties, finish off her beef pot pieTakes some water up to her refuge beneath the city skyRoses on the roof among the glass and metalRed moonlight pouring down on their ruby petalsShe nurtures them at night time, a starlight gardenerCold asphalt and cement, won’t ever harden herShe could curse her day’s routine, O but what would that proveNo, she’d rather grow day by day, like her roses on the roofAs a little girl near Tulsa, her mom had a garden, tooAnd they’d walk and laugh together, where daydreams and roses grewNow she’s lonely in the city, her roots can’t reach through concreteBut in gardens of her mem’ries, childhood roses still smell sweetSo tomorrow in her office, she’ll feel like she’s young and freeCos there’s buildings in her window, but in her mind she can seeRoses on the roof among the glass and metalWarm sunlight pouring down on their ruby petalsShe cares for them at night time, a starlight gardenerCold asphalt and cement, won’t ever harden herShe could curse her day’s routine, O but what would that proveNo, she’d rather grow day by day, like her roses on the roof©2007 Robert George
