The Dance Before the DarknessThere’s a soft patch of grass by the sandy riverbedWe go there to watch the dancing right around sunsetAs the sky turns dark and orange like a leopard’s skinTwilight waltzes on the water as the night moves inLong grass swayin’ in the meadow seems to welcome night and shadowIt’s the dance before the darknessAs the daylight runs and hidesWhen sunshine fades and slowly gives wayTo the sweet romance of nightListen you can hear it, and feel the restless spiritIt calls out through the cool evening airWhere a breeze is blowing, or a river’s flowingThe dance before the darkness is thereWe walk in the door and nearly turn some music onBut there’s rhythm in the night that doesn’t need a songO if we waltzed any slower we’d make time stand stillAnd the heat between our kisses brings a fevered chillShadows danced above the mantelAnd watched me blow out the candleIt’s the dance before the darknessAs the daylight runs and hidesWhen sunshine fades and slowly gives wayTo the sweet romance of nightListen you can hear it, and feel the restless spiritIt calls out through the cool evening airWhere impassioned lovers, desire each otherThe dance before the darkness is there©2007 Robert George
