Footnotes of FaithMonths of getting up before sunriseAre stuffed in the bags below her eyesShe helps her poor dad into his chairHe almost smiles with Folger’s in the airShe sits with him and reads his fav’rite PsalmsKnowing what made him her dad is almost goneHe’s not a feeble man in a wicker rockerHe’s playing football at his alma materAnd jitterbugging with the coach’s daughterSo as she reads of an eternal rewardShe pictures a youthful man once moreCos life passes in chaptersWe never know what the next one holdsMaybe it’s just as well, that only time will tellWhen our story’s been toldBut there are thoughts of wisdomIn the corners of each daySo in our times of need, always take time to readWhat’s in footnotes of faithAs he wipes Spaghetti-Os from her chinHer smile says she wants the Grinch againThose bright colors really light up her faceHer fingers touch them ‘fore he turns each pageAnd he still sees the mother of that little girlIn her green eyes and yellow curlsHe used to have a laptop in that leather man-purseNow it’s filled with handi-wipes and PampersAnd his old golf bag became a laundry hamperBut if Dr. Seuss shines in her lonely dreamsSurely prayer helps him see what heaven meansCos life passes in chaptersWe never know what the next one holdsMaybe it’s just as well, that only time will tellWhen our story’s been toldBut there are thoughts of wisdomIn the corners of each daySo in our times of need, always take time to readWhat’s in footnotes of faith©2007 Robert George
