Lone Star State FarmWell, Pete saw that twister, from his old John DeereBlack clouds blocked the sun, wind blew cornbread crumbs from his ragged beardMa met him at the cellar, where they hid from rain n hailThat twister roared by, hung from the Texas sky like a dragon’s tailThey knelt beside a lantern, and prayed throughout the nightAnd hoped Sam Joad, from up the road and his sons’d be alrightPete lost his farmhouse, his gurnsy and his grainA harvest of tears, because his John Deere was all that remainedOf his Lone Star state farmNot his sows, or wellhouse or barnNuthin’ left of the chicken coop but feathers and wireWeathervane rooster choked by a wheelbarrow tireCurse the luck and curse the stormThat took his Lone Star state farmPete’s insurance was all paid up, but they rejected his claimHe had to squint, to read the print just above his nameHe said “my scarecrow’s just straw, without his pipe and clothesAnd without your suits, and fancy shoes you guys’re just crowson my Lone Star state farmnesting in, the trash bins and barnNuthin’ left of my chicken coop but feathers and wireWeathervane rooster choked by a wheelbarrow tireCurse you all and curse the stormThat took my Lone Star state farm”Pete came home and walked the miles, of his old fencelineThen the sun came out, and rainbows to the south helped his faith to shineThen he saw six straw hats, a-peekin’ over the hillSam Joad and his sons, had gladly come to help him rebuildhis Lone Star state farm…his Lone Star state farm©2007 Robert George
