Major MinorMajor Minor had a free spirit in a frame weak and smallcome his fifteenth birthday he barely stood four foot tallone day a circus pounded stakes near his home in Dearbornehe begged the ringmaster to teach him to performso they put him on a pony in an army uniformand his folks never came lookin' cos he wasn't their kindTinkerbell joined, outside Des Moines with a fancy magic actshe stood 4'2", in pointed shoes and pulled tiger cubs from small top hatsthey took moonlit rides, on Major's pony at night as he wooed her with manners n charmthey wed one day, near Sante Fe in some old preacher's barnbut his folks didn't come cos he wasn't their kindwhen Tinkerbell's, belly swelled Major prayed ev'ry nightGod took care, to hear his prayers and their boy grew up healthy and righthe learned sleight of hand, but that boy planned to leave the big top behindTink and Major wept, the day he left past a tattered circus signhe walked away feeling sure that he wasn't their kindMajor Minor died one winter morn' looking proud in his hat n uniformas he entered heaven's graceat his grave were fire-eaters, strong men and tarot readerssadness painting tears on an old clown's facehis son was the only kin to bear his box of pinecos the rest thought he wasn't their kindwell, that boy caught a bus to Dearborne that nightand bid farewell to roots that had robbed his pridenow that old pony wouldn't feed...he just wandered and pacedand with Major gone Tink cursed her lonely daystill she recognized the new magician in fresh white-faceyeah, their boy left the outside world cos he wasn't their kind...Major Minor had a wild, free spirit in a frame weak and small...(c)2006 Robert George
