Bounty on His HeadJimbo sat inside sir, on his rocker in the darknipping on his jug and, twanging his jaw-harpcos the only porch that, was near his poor shackwas the old dry creek full of, toads n diamondbackshe kept two silver dollars, in a kitchen drawerhis old cavalry hat, hung by the doorwell, Chico's gang rode up, and robbed poor Jimbo bareshot him and he rode skyward, in that rockin' chairthough Chico took all, Jimbo'd had on this earththat fool local sheriff, put just fifty dollar's worthof bounty on his head, bounty on his headwell, Seth was riding guard, out at the Fort that daywhen word came his Pa, had just passed awayhis commander gave him, two weeks leave to mournwhen Seth talked to that sheriff, he found no posse'd been formedfolks thought he was crazy, that he'd join Jimbo in deathWhen Seth left with his rifle, to bring back the outlaw witha bounty on his headall he'd expect, to ever collectoff that killer living or deadyet somehow, he felt proudas he rode off thinking aboutthe bounty on his headsmoke puffs on a hilltop, and Chico's gang droppedby the light of the moonSeth left them for that valley, letting buzzard's belliesbe their only tombthen he gathered what they'd stole, and took Chico back fora trial and a noose, above a trapdoorclouds covered the hills that day, like a hangman's hoodSeth said a used gallows, was a waste of woodso they gave him that timber, for a porch on his pa's old shackhe turned down the sheriff's money, and let that cavalry hatbe the bounty on his headall he'd expect, to ever collectoff that killer living or deadyet somehow, he felt proudas he rode off thinking aboutthe bounty on his head(c)2005 Robert George
