AmericanaOn a street outside the freightyarda singer threw down his hat and playedbut some guy, that was passin' by said he's just beggin'and that's bad for the good ol' USAbut me...I loved that drifter's songsso I spoke up and said he belongedwith race tracks and monster truck ralliesmigrants workin' the Salinas valleyand yesterday's headlines, predictin' better timesblowin' down midnight hobo alleysand high school boys getting drunk in Tijuanathem and that street singeryeah, that's Americanawell, from Lefty Frizell to Woody Guthriethat rounder played ev'ry requesthe kept an eye, on freights goin' by cos it was Fall and his torn coat preferred weather out westin his mind I was a stadium crowdas he sang one last song heartfelt and loudfor Texas Trumps and Okie Rockefellersgetting rich on stills in their storm cellarsand a little girl, with golden curlsshedding her first tear for Old Yellerhow she loves her Scooby-Doo pajamasall them and that street singeryeah, that's Americana...that's Americanawell, I checked my wallet and threw a twenty in his hathe thanked me and chased a train whistlin' down the trackand as that slow freight headed for the coastit yodeled like the singing brakemen's ghostfor virgin flakes dusting patches of poppiesand tickling pine needles in the Rockiesthe first snow Autumn brings, paints beautiful scenesthat no artist can hope to copyand the soldier writing home to his mamaall that and that street singerthat's Americana...that's Americana(c)2005 Robert George
