allends.....is it difficult to play a sitar? not for classical sitar stuff but ....to incorporate it into pop music like George Harrison did?

It is actually quite hard to add live sitar tracks to contemporary projects. You see, the sound of the sitar isn't in the instrument at all: it's in the heart and hands of the player. The awesome co-write projects I contributed to only benefitted from my playing because I'm an experienced classically trained player.

Virtual sitar tracks sound better to my ears than live playing by a new player in part because it is a very difficult instrument to play in tune and also in part because new players just don't know the special inflections that trained sitar players use. Without that juice, why bother with a real sitar anyway? Another factoid: a wonderful Taxi forum member once told me that she performed more than a thousand edits on the sitar tracks she recorded of a rather good young player for use on one of her beautiful CDs. It kinda makes you think twice.

Am I a snob? Maybe. But think of adding live sitar material in the same way you would consider adding solo violin and you'll get my point.

I see what you mean. It took my local engineer hours to tune up the violin on one of my tracks using auto tuning.

So...What kind of pedals are out there for guitar that allow for that type of sound to be created? and is it ok to use the tempora? ( that little humming box ).

My sitar playing friends who don't play guitar are fond of mocking the Electro Harmonix Ravish Sitar pedal, but the guitar players among us are silently thinking "COOL"!

Tanpuras of all types are awesome in pop music tracks that lean toward India. I like my virtual tanpura included in SwarPlug from Swar Systems.
