Hi Taxi folks!

Need your advice please.

My Beyer DT 150's are falling to bits.
Just new ear pads are about a third the price of the original article.

So, I wonder, should I save my pennies and upgrade to a new set of cans?

But which ones?

Any views gratefully received.

like the Audio Technica MTH-45 but the covering of the earphones has come off over time, mostly all over my face before I go out for the evening (LOL). Mostly they get used for recording, and the occasional ref listen. they were relatively cheap.

I have a couple different AKG sets that I really like. The K 240MKII and the K 240. Both are incredibly comfortable for if I'm doing longer recording session work. I don't usually mix with them, but if I compare what I hear in my cans to my near fields I get similar response in frequency range. I could definitely recommend these cans. There are so many out there now though, and lots of reviews on them all to help you make in informed decision on what will give you the best bang for your buck.

Many folks have recommended ATH-M50s which I got and should come with a warning sticker. :

"Not to be used when tracking vocals (if you move your mouth when you sing )." - Very, very squeaky and noisy - and the mic'll pick it all up. Had to go back to my AKG's that are falling apart for vocal tracking. But if you're using them just as an alternative to monitors, the sound is great.

I mentioned that I bought another cable also after patching my old one and soldering a new 1/4" plug, however I recently discovered that it wasn't the cord, the jack in the interface is worn! So the old cable still works, but now I have a spare.

The leather pads are working out great.

*P.S. I'd offer to mail you the extra boot, but the shipping cost would be more than I paid for the boots!

A regular sewing needle works well, a thimble comes in handy, you want the softer, thinner goatskin-like leather as in dressier boots and not the thick cow-hide as might be in a work boot, otherwise you'll probably need a leather needle.

Love my Beyer DT 990's! Tempted to pick up the 770's if I ever have the extra $$ laying around.

been using sennheiser hd280 pro's for a long time. rugged, deep strong lo's, crystal clear highs, very comfortable. they have gold connectors and screw off tips so you can go 1/4 inch or mini jack (i-pod size). i think the last time i bought a pair, maybe 2007, they were about a hundred bucks at guitar center. i don't know if that's a lot for cans, but i sure do love'em!

I really like my AKG K271 Studios. Comfortable for long recording sessions. Mix in them as well, only thing is they don't have much low end so I still have to go to speakers to do final tweaks.

I test drove cans before buying my Sony MDR-7506 Pro's. From what I read, though, the 7509's are better. I don't know about longevity. Here is a useful link: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan10/a ... phones.htm

Really, though, if you have a way to A/B headphones in a store, that is the way to go. Bring your own reference CD to the place and choose what sounds right to you. That's what I did.
