Sax players, what virtual sax do you recommend?

Hi,

Maybe this is a dumb question because obviously you bona fide horn players don't need to use a sampled sax. But I compose jazz, and I'd love to know a good one.

I've used the Logic X sax, and it sounds ok in some places, and like a toy horn you get at Christmas in others!

I saw a package where you could get Mr. Alto, Mr. Tenor and Mr. Baritone, but I'd prefer just one good alto for now.

I don't think there is a single convincing saxophone virtual instrument yet. I heard one a couple of years ago that sounded ok, but it required a lot of tweaking and was being played by a sax player. It depends on the use... if you are looking for section sounds there are good libraries out there. If you are looking for a solo of any kind, it's hard to find something that sounds convincing.

You can do a lot, with the right controller, but the short answer is Samplemodeling. I've been able to get some pretty convincing trumpets out of Wallander's WIVI instruments, but twelve-plus years of marching band/concert band/pit band/pep band/stage band probably didn't hurt.

the only thing that's even close for a saxophone.

Paulie above is a very adept sax player and I sure he would love to play on your project (for the right deal).

I'm reformed; I haven't wet a reed, since 1995, when I realized I couldn't sing with a horn in my mouth.

As Mojo and Andy have already said... Samplemodeling probably has one of the best ones out there. It's on my list... right under having Paul record for me.

Thank you, Paulie, Len, Mojobone, Russell, and Andy!

I will purchase samplemodelling in the New Year. And would totally be up for having Paulie play on any jazz track ( either being paid outright or getting a percentage of the ownership rights).

Just want to get my first forward within the next 6 months to gauge my own musical/sound production instincts. If that doesn't happen soon, I will be on here again getting more good advice.

Thanks, guys!

You might also take a look at Sensual Sax by Embertone. I use it fairly often, and it sounds good if you're willing to work within it's structure. Here's a youtube vid:
