Yesterdays TAXI TV was full of 411 I couldn't quite get it all. Great interview.

Does anyone have any favorite vst synths they personally like for drops and bad ass synth sounds in EDM and Hip Hop tracks? I have been getting rejected for using 'dated sounds' I get it. I did a lot of drugs in the 70s Be that as it may, I'm always open to expanding the palette.

Thanks

I just started using Spire. Comparing EDM songs I've tried to write so far (which is 2) using Spire in lieu of trying to program more tradition synths such as the Tetra, Minibrute, Modular, etc has been night and day.

I don't think the there's any one "killer app" as far EDM sounds go

The folks who are good at it could can make great tunes of stock plugins that come with most DAWs

The mistake can be to neglect some of what I'd call the sound design aspect in favour of trawling through a bunch of presets, which can sound dated in the wrong hands.

Some things you could try..

Layering - get creative... Some of my EDM patches are 4 sounds layered together. Try and think of each part having its own purpose. Like adding attack...width...depth...sustain. it's actually a lot of fun and very simple to do. Don't forget to try changing the octave of one or more layers too.

Effects - You can really go to town here. Distortion is your friend. As is delay, and sometimes the right reverb . Try putting your layered sounds through a couple of these. I bet it won't sound dated

Filters - lots of EDM uses filter sweeps to add movement or build excitement

Sidechaining - Trigger a compressor that makes your synths pulse in time with the kick, it will suddenly sound more contemporary.

Hope that helps

Mark

@jadams Yes. I think that was one that was mentioned y'day -- for sure.

@cosmicdolphin -- Thank you. This would work for me. I have some great sounds already. Certainly more than enough. One of the things I found most useful was learning how to get rid of certain effects on presets and then adding them as needed throughout.

I love your idea of doubling and quadrupling down on sounds. Fat with unlimited possibilities.

if I had to chose one it would be Nexus. the exp packs are also great to get. for hip hop love the trap exp packs and for edm there are many.

Nexus is a great modern sounding good all round vst. Its not a synth its a rompler.

I always thought that some of the melda plugins might work well in those genres.
Modulation heaven

If that just isn't enough for you, the never-ending potential of our modulators will be at your disposal. Modulate any parameter from sources such as an LFO, audio level follower, envelope generator, randomize, or pitch detector. Your sound will never be static again.
