Hello Fellow Taxi Forum Members,
I have a pair of AKG 240 headphone I have used since the mid to late 80s. I use them on a crown D70 power amp for monitoring, including a live drum kit.... They are starting to get pretty rough, They owe me nothing.... any suggestions on what I should replace them with...

Thanks,

I love my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro headphones...maybe even more than my Yamaha HS80M monitors. :D

These are OPEN headphones. They won't give you the isolation you probably want for recording acoustic instruments & vocals, but they are very accurate for mixing and editing.

While mixing with these headphones I use 112db's Redline Monitor: http://www.112db.com/redline/monitor/

Product reviews:

"The clarity of the DT 990s is superb. You hear everything, whether you want to or not."

Audio-Technica ATH M-50 will be my next headphones purchase, though I likely wouldn't pay that much for cans that will be used for tracking; I have ATH M-40fs for that. If you don't need isolation, Grado and Sennheiser make some nice stuff, too.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the input.... I will mainly be using the headphones for tracking, and maybe some double checking on panning and left right balance for mixing ( I guess they call that imaging ).... but really mainly for tracking.....
.
I have borrowed a pair of Sony 7506 headphones, and they seem too boomy,

I borrowed a pair of CH700 Samson's....did not like the sound at all.......

I borrowed a pair of K220M AKG's... felt too confined, did not like the closed ear design

I guess I am looking for a light feeling semi open ear design like my old 240's, but with a smoother response.... I am going to have to do some research on the AT's that were reccomended..... The Beyer 990Pro's look interesting also.....Leakage is not a problem at all....

PLEASE.... keep the suggestions coming....!!!!

I have a pair of ultrasones, they sound good. I don't mix in headphones. They are 650s or something. Worth a listen to see if they are to your taste. You'll get used to whatever you decide on eventually anyway, so comfort is the most important factor if you are going to be spending hours under them.

To be clear, I use the ATH M-40fs for tracking vocals, the isolation is critical, due to the threat of leakage. (compared to my Sonys they're kinda boomy, imo) For most else, I use Sony MDR-V600, mainly for the clarity and detail in the midrange, I haven't noticed any boomy qualities at all, and that particular model seems to be favored by DJs working in clubs, where any headphone lows would likely be trumped by nearby subwoofers. Your mileage may vary, whatever and ever, amen. ;)
