Bass playing Guitarists...I'd like to give you a Wedgie!

I'm a guitarist who plays bass on my own recordings. I love playing bass but I'm not very good at playing bass with my fingers. I'm much better with a plectrum (because I'm used to that from the guitar).

I recently discovered Wedgie Rubber Plectrums. They give me a sound which is much closer to fingers (but not quite). I really love 'em. :)

BTW, they're also very good on acoustic guitar.

Thanks Stu! Those looks really nice. I'm going to try them. I love having a variety of plectrums around. I use about 10 different ones regularly, and rubber could definitely be a useful material to produce some sounds!

Thanks for the headsup; that could come in really handy! :D I often play bass with fingers, but sometimes I rip my guitar nails off.....

Wow, I've been looking for something like this, felt picks don't work that good. A few years ago about a half inch of my right first finger got crushed off so that now the nail grows over the end and when I play bass it clicks. I've been using my thumb but that's pretty limited.

Which gauge do you like for bass?

I bought a pack of 3 Hard plectrums for $5 and I like them. :)
I'm keen to try the Soft and Medium ones next.

I bought the thick ones in hard and soft versions. Don't yet know how well they'll wear, but they make it very easy to get a consistent fingery (is that a word? SpellCheck says, "no") tone whether alternate-picking or using all down strokes. I suspect the picks will last longer using alternate picking. Because of the thumb sized depression on only one side, you can really only comfortably hold these picks one way; hardly a dealbreaker. These things could save a session even for a real bass player, if she got a blister or somewhat. The stiffness changes the feel more than the tone; I'd imagine some folks might have a preference for faster runs, but the soft ones have just a little more 'give'. They both sound great and are very controllable, but I might wish for a slightly larger size for even better grip. (the rubber provides very positive control and is way less slippery than any other pick that doesn't have embedded sand in it. I may have to try a soft thin one to see if it has more articulation, but the upshot is, these picks are a winner for any converted guitarist or pickstyle bassist who wants more tonal options. Definitely a big thumbs up.

You guys are so good at spending my money! :)

I just ordered some from The States. Couldn't find them anywhere in the UK.

Consider us wedgiefied. No spellcheckers were harmed during formulation of this text.

The great Carol Kaye always recorded bass with a pick. She said it gave a better attack versus playing with your fingers.
