~ $20 ~

Only downside is the Artist version doesn't allow external plugs. For that, need to upgrade to the Pro version which is an additional $99. Pro also includes other features including a project mastering suite, additional plugs and so on.
Pretty good deal considering I paid $299 on a cross-grade special from my previous DAW to get Pro. Version 2 should be out at the start of November.

I have to agree. I started with Artist and went to Pro just in time for the $99 sale. Actually, I was ready to pay full price and got lucky with the timing.
I just found out yesterday that Studio One also is the best way I've found yet to speed up or slow down the tempo of a recording without audio degradation. I used to use Audacity for this, but even small changes in tempo would cause a noticeable degradation. With S1's "time stretching" feature I can go up or down as much as 5% with virtually no degrading. That alone is worth the $99 to me, as I just spent $500 on a studio demo that turned out about 5 bpm too fast.
$20 for the Artist version has to be the bargain of the year. It does nearly everything the Pro Version does (except VST Plug-ins, as you stated) and the Pro version at $99 does just about everything Pro Tools does for much less, and I understand it's lots easier to use. Like any other complex software, there is a learning curve for certain functions, but it doesn't take much more than an hour or two to figure out everything your likely to need for most projects.

All the news on V2.

Interesting. Looking at all the inclusions, I'm a little scared it's going the direction of other bloatware DAWs, which is not what I signed up for. Still, as long as there are excellent feature and workflow updates, I would upgrade.

V2 includes Melodyne Essential. Intriguing. I could have a crack at singing now.
