I use the ml 4000 quite a lot and I like it but that is only on my solo stuff I do for film/tv projects. For a release as an artist I would definitely have a pro do it.

Whenever possible, I send stuff out to be mastered, if I'm the guy that mixed it; the point of the process is to have an experienced second set of ears, in the right sort of room, with the right sort of monitors. Nearfields are for mixing, mastering is altogether a different subject.

good points........ i'm thinking that instead of sending it out. i might be able to use those $'s towards some new plugins.

Remember you don't pay mastering engineers for their gear, you pay them for their ear. New plugins are not going to give you a mastering engineers craft and experience.
That being said you don't need to hire anybody for tv/film/production music tracks.
For album releases, I think it depends...if it's supposed to compete with mainstream major label product, I think having it mastered by a *real* mastering engineer is essential. For Internet only releases in non-mainstream styles, you should be safe doing it by yourself assuming you've got some skills...
A variety of UAD plugins for me...

First choice: pro mastering engineer. No plug in comes with great ears and years of experience.
For film tv stuff, I use Izotope Ozone, some UAD stuff, TRacks occasionally, just got Sonnox Inflator (trying to figure it out), and Slate virtual tube mix bus. What of those I choose depends on the style of music and what sounds best for the piece.
Part of mastering something that is supposed to sound like a collection is getting the levels right from song to song so that there is a flow. In my experience, not the easiest thing to do!
Good luck!

T-Racks and Ozone 5.
I love everything in Ozone except the EQ. The linear phase EQ just doesn't feel as transparent as the one in T-Racks. Right now, I like to put the Opto Compressor ahead of Ozone 5.
