I Love My Rode NT1 Condenser Mic

I used to work at Guitar Center in the pro audio department and one of the perks we had was a recording studio where we could A/B the equipment to decide what to buy for ourselves (oh, yeah and recommend to customers). ;)

One day we pulled out the good mics. The Neumann, the Blue, the Shure and this (much) less expensive and little known to us, Rode. All things were equal in the setup, and that darn little thing sounded better or at least as good as the others. In fact, as far as noise or hiss (THD) it sounded the cleanest!

Needles to say, I bought the NT1 (with my employee discount, of course) and somewhere between 12 and 15 years later, it is still my main recording mic and has given me zero problems.

I would absolutely recommend it.

So I'm not the only one!!!!!

I love my NT1 too.

I love it so much I keep a little plastic cover on it to keep the dust out. :D

Much to my shame, once or twice I have sung in to it with the gold dot on the wrong side!!!

Me too, I have a 1st gen NT1 about that same age, it's still my go to mike and does a nice job ...

But I admit to having a wandering ear ... is there something newer and better, in a similar price range? When I use the Rode on acoustic guitars it seems a little artificial, or not flat & true ... across different rooms / guitars / mike placements over the years. (Currently I use it in a treated sound booth).

I've also tried a matched pair of small diaphram condensers (cheap low-end), but I prefer the Rode over those.

I've only used the NT1 for studio vocals, but I grabbed the last part of the break-out session from the last Rally on recording guitar, and the guy said he likes the Shure SM57 and 58 for studio micing acoustic guitar. I also learned something new from him that he does not angle the mic at the sound hole. It is always off center so you don't get the low end noise.

I had an SM57 that I used to use to mic my electric guitar amp for recording and a 58 for singing, but I sold them both since I'm not really recording miced amps anymore and I got the SM58 Beta for singing scratch vocals when I don't want to fire up the Rode.

Thanks Stephen, I have an SM57 but never tried it on acoustic. I'll give it a shot.

12 or 15 ears later, maybe A/B it with the Gauge ECM 87. That is all.
