Chiarelli & His Panning Rule

Hi Guys,
I am still not sure I fully understand Rob's panning rule. It seems he uses - in simple terms - just two ways of panning: Center and hard left/right. Is the secret that by having tracks lower in volume whilst panned hard to one side he essentially achieves the same result as panning them slightly off center at a higher volume? I really struggle understanding his concept... Maybe someone can shed some light...
Cheers,
Matt

That's a great explanation in the article that Marcus posted above.

Regarding volume levels, you just have to use your ears because the parts will be louder / softer depending on where they are panned. If you change the panning you will often want to adjust the volume.

You should also be aware of the panning law in your DAW. The panning law controls are intended to help "even out" the perceived volume of a part by changing the volume as you change the panning. You will probably want to leave it set at the default for your DAW, but it's a good idea to be aware of how the panning law is affecting your mix. https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advi ... should-use

Also try mixing in mono it will really help get the levels right

I did some further research and watched Warren Huart's clip on this topic and it seems that those engineers operating LCR panning still make an exemption when it comes to e.g. drums, i.e. they remain panned in a less radical way (i.e. they would not pan the Hihat far right or left). Is that also your understanding?
Cheers,
Matt

Hi all,,

I just had a return for a song due to panning too much.

Screener wrote:

" I find that each element sounds too separate with too much right/left separation perhaps and it's causing the song to feel fractured. "

It was for an 80's pop listing...I actually recorded the synths, lead vocal and drums on 4 track in 1987. This mix has added harmonies, hand claps, vocal ahh/ooh, and 1 short keyboard riff that echoes a phrase 2 times.

Here is the tune in the panned condition if you want to hear it! :)

I of course remixed so it is more center now..but saved the version I submitted.

I liked it panned, but hey!

Best,
Linda C

Love that 80s vibe (my time :D )! But I was a but surprised that you were very delicate on the reverb... If I remember correctly those tunes used to be drenched in reverb :D
