The difference 4 years can make

Hi TAXI friends.

For some background I joined TAXI in August 2015, and started producing in January of 2016. My first songs were signed late 2016. I now have nearly 300 songs signed.

I was just in my BMI account (btw happy BMI day!) and was reminded of how my journey began.

My BMI royalty statement history began in 2017.

2017- for the 4 quarters I received royalties in only 1 quarter totaling about $2 and change
2018- for the 4 quarters I received 1 royalty statement for a little over $6.00
2019- I had royalty statements in 3 of the 4 quarters and thanks to a 1:36 vocal placement on ABC The Rookie I cracked 1k for the first time
2020- 4 royalty statements and thanks to a song on the huge hit "Outer Banks" , plus continuing ABC "The Rookie" income, plus many smaller placements I quadrupled the amount of 2019 royalties
2021- This year I've surpassed 2020's amount with some really interesting things that jumped out to me.

A song I signed to a TAXI Road Rally mentor in 2019 just showed up on the show "Sweetwater" and apparently that show gets a lot of replays! (Thanks TAXI!)

Another song showed up on 2 different episodes of "Extreme Sisters" on TLC and actually paid pretty well for being a background instrumental that only ran for :10!

7 of the 20 libraries I am in placed songs in the following countries. (Btw by far the US pays the highest rates and Japan & Hong Kong were pretty great for me too.)

USA
CANADA
HONG KONG
HUNGARY
JAPAN
SWITZERLAND
UNITED KINGDOM
DENMARK
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
FRANCE
GREECE
IRELAND
MEXICO
NORWAY
SWEDEN

Even though the first years were discouraging- spending money buying gear, buying more gear, hiring players and vocalists that do what you can’t do.. If you keep at it things eventually start to pay off. Of course collaborations are one way to circumvent the outlay of $$ and I've certainly done my share of those!

And very important to my journey was attending the Road Rally, watching TAXI TV, getting custom critiques through TAXI, and using The Forums and Forwards Blog.

Just my thoughts on my 6 years with TAXI and the royalty history that followed.
Keep writing.

Best, John

Thanks for your update, John, and - wow - 300 songs is a lot! The few of those that I have heard so far sounded great. So, continued success to you!

Tom
Thanks Tom! I appreciate that.

Congratulations JP!! My 4th year is coming up in April but my stats are no where close to yours but I guess I keep going and shoot for the 5 year plan.

Encouraging post, thank you.

Hey thanks Andre!
Yeah I think Covid took at least a year out of everyone’s plan 🙂. I still wrote and hired vocalists through it all, but if it hadn’t been for Outer Banks in April and Y and R it would’ve been a really flat year for me.
