Decided to leave taxi(Three years of no success)

Post by gerrel » Mon Oct 13, 2008 11:14 pm

Well I will like to say goodbye to all my friends here at Taxi its been real. I have decided to leave Taxi...They couldn't help me do ONE thing. I was with them for three years and I have decided before I blow another 200 dollars on them I will use my own Inide Bible resources and get my music heard without the hassle of Taxi. Now taxi works for some people thats good. But I discovered I can use that 200 dollars and my Indie Bible and do every thing that Taxi is doing myself. For those of you who had success with them good! For those who have not. Taxi is not the end of the world. They have helped me grow by bashing every demo I sent them with negativity and some with positivity yet still was not submitted because of strange reasons. SO instead of paying them 200 dollars plus 5 dollars every year for my songs I will use the indie bible contacts and have it were I get paid 200 dollars or more and I get paid five dollars a song like so many of my other musician friends who could not understand why I was paying so much for something I could have done myself. At first I wasn't going to leave. But as it got close to my renewal deadline and from what I gathered for how I can do my own pitching to publishers and radio stations and distribution companies I thought it would be good for me to go. Three years is enough. I'm sure taxi would replace me easily by someone who will be new and green to the company like I was till the reality set it. It all goes down to not leaving my FATE in the hands of guys who 'just don't dig my music'. And thats cool. because my new demo of six songs I did. I did a trail run on a site and got 500 hits of folks who like my style and music and want to purchase it! This was a personal break through for me. Truthfully Taxi crushed me from there hard negative slander of my music and it took a while to rebuild and start over. Only to find out Taxi has never got a major artist signed ever who you can see on MTV or VH1 or BET or any other video station or radio stations. That was my biggest RED FLAG. If taxi works for you good. IF not get out don't loose time for things you can do yourself! The industry is changing..Indie labels are getting the power now! God Bless you all and I wish you all great success!!Ger-rel

hey gerrelyou're free to do whatever you think is best for you, BUT:you post your text with lots of accusation without any real argument or objective reason. if you haven't been forwarded, there's maybe a reason for that. now if you decide to not re-write your tunes according to the feedback that taxi provides for whatsoever reason than this is your personal decision. but then don't blame it on taxi if you don't succeed, because they did their job!you say that taxi works very well for some people - well, maybe there's a reason for that? and maybe this shows that taxi really works, and is legitimate?however, I agree that taxi isn't for everybody (and I'm saying this without any arrogance). if you want to do music for your own enjoyment and/or don't want to hear critiques, than it may be better for you if you leave. but again, this hasn't anything to do with the service taxi provides and/or it's legitimation. it's simply your own personal decision, so I can't see any reason for blaming taxi.you mentioning the indie bible and that your able to do what taxi does. I doubt that, simply because sending some cds to publishers or labels is definitely NOT what taxi does. the big advantage of taxi is that the listing parties get pre-selected /-screened music, and not just unsolicited cd's. you simply don't have the connections to the industrie and I don't think you can build them on your own, especially not to very low costs (postage, print-outs, resouces... go figure).also, you're posting all that on taxi's own forum - sorry but this is simply disrespectful.martin

Everytime I see someone posting that they are not renewing with Taxi I inmediately look at the number of posts this member has made, and usually its the same: not many posts. If you dont interact, post questions, share your tracks and listen to others, you are not going to find what do you need to do to use the resources that Taxi places at your hands. At the risk of sounding cheesy, just think of the name: Taxi. That is what it is, it's job is only to take you to a place that you can go by yourself walking, but it will probably take you more time to get there.

Funny thing... soon after reading this post I get a phone call from the senior music coordinator for a major film production company about a forward from a few weeks ago. It's not a done deal yet, but my song is now temped in the edit time line for final approval in a major film release.I'm early in my third year. Dozens of forwards. No deals yet -- but could I get an opportunity like this with my own legwork? Sure. If I spent 100 times more in both time and money. Taxi is a long term investment in a long term goal. Maybe it doesn't fit your goals, but for me the cost is definitely worth it.Let us know when you "do it yourself" all the way to MTV.Aub

Normally I stay away from these posts but for some reason I can't resist this time. I don't think Taxi is for Ger-rel, I think what he's looking for is an agent or a manager. Someone who can pump him as he is instead of guide him to where he needs to be. He's got a book and a couple hundred bucks left in his pocket, the stuff web legends are made of! I wish him the best of luck out there on the street.I joined Taxi so that I would become a better songwriter, not for them to do something "for" me in exchange for the money. I'm in my first year, had a couple forwards but no deals...the only surprise so far is that I've had a couple forwards. Strange how a forward can almost be a letdown when you're always trying to improve. In my view Taxi is pretty clear about the role they play, and they are generally excellent at it. Maybe they need to type their marketing in all caps.

My first deal came in my third year of TAXI membership. I'll never be an MTV start, nor do I want to be.Ger-rel is the second person I've seen recently that seems to think TAXI is a management company (if Mazz remembers correctly, the others were the Divys). I'm not sure how he got that impression, but TAXI is not a bunch of managers. They simply connect clients with music via listings. It's up to the musicians whether they want to play that game. TAXI is certainly not the only game in town. The best of luck to you Ger-rel.Mazz

I was lucky enough to get a deal and a pretty high-profile placement within one year of my membership. Since then I haven't had much action, and I've been feeling less optimistic lately. I've found it very refreshing to read my buddies Mazz' and Aub's 3rd year stories today. I've been feeling very unsure about my own long-term Taxi commitment lately, and their stories really help me look further into the future...
