A Question on Submissions to Producers...

I'm just wondering what form the producer's interest tends to take - is it in you as an artist or in using your songs for artists they are currently working with? Has anyone had any joy with listings like this?
I ask because on another site I submitted to a listing for a producer and in return was offered the 'opportunity' for him to 'develop me as an artist' which mostly sounded like it was going to consist of me paying £250/month to talk to him on Skype now and then and send him a few MP3s. Let's just say that I declined and regretted the submission fee.

Hi Ben - it appears you dodged a bullet!
Over the years I've heard (sadly on more than one occasion) of producers (some with album awards hanging on the walls of their office) convince new artists to enter into "development" deals.
The worst of these stories simplified was:
* producer hears an artist with original style and songs
* producer (based on his track record) promises/insinuates that for $$$ upfront (enter a large sum of money here) he'll get the new artist a deal, etc
* the artist cuts the producer a check for a large sum of money and signs a contract giving the producer some ownership of the copyright, points, etc Who knows? Who reads contracts?
* finally the producer uses the artist's money to cut demos on the songs that the producer now has in his own publishing company and pitches the songs to other artists that are already signed
* the producer stops returning the new artist's phone calls

Yep, that's kinda what I envisaged. Though that sounds particularly bad! I was just seeing a potential financial black hole with nothing gained no matter what was going on at his end. Rest assured I have long since run away.

Sorry, only just saw this! Thanks! I think it's one worth keeping in mind. I suppose to be fair, he did sign the Rolling Stones soon afterward, though at George Harrison's recommendation. Obviously learnt from his mistakes!
