How long does it take to see the money in your account after the project has been successful?

Let's suppose a project has been an instant hit. How long would it usually take to see the results?

You'd have to be far more specific in terms of defining "project".

Back end royalties take 6 to 9 months or so to show up (at least).
Mechanical licences would be paid to you when the CD is pressed (since it's pennies/copy)
Digital downloads would depend on the service or the agreement.
Sync fees would be according to your agreement (some publishers pay out quarterly or every six months)
If you're recording your own CD and selling it.. as soon as money changes hands after a concert or when you hit the threshold for payouts if you're using an online distributor.

I would suggest as a good starting reference, is John Braheny's "The Craft and the Business of Songwriting"
and Jason Blume "This Business of Songwriting"

I would also suggest looking at some TAXI TV episodes that cover this topic.

The first goal is to get your songwriting up to par. Use peer to peer here to get feedback and determine your genre, a la's etc for any given song so it can be pitched effectively. Attend the Rally. All questions are answered there!

I'm not sure about radio - but a tv placement would fall into the backend royalties that Vikki mentioned. So let's say you got a placement in a show today, you can probably expect the money in 2-3 quarters (6-9 months), but it very well could take longer than that. There are a lot of variables

Wow, Mark... really? They pay you in quarters?! Not even the folding stuff? Yikes...
Well - that might come in handy when confronted with an empty & hungry downtown parking meter. :? :)

To add on to what's been covered here, it also depends on the PRO. ASCAP pays out after 9 months (assuming cue sheets are accurate), whereas SESAC is about 6 months.
