Vocal song placement in "Outer Banks" !!

Post by JohnnyP » Thu Apr 09, 2020 11:23 am

Hi Taxi Family.

I hope you're doing well!

With the pandemic going on I almost hate to share my good news but I'm about to burst.

I got an email today from one of my synch agents confirming a big vocal song placement on Netflix Outer Banks! Scheduled for episode 2 which should be airing Wed April 22, 2020. I first got the contract at the 2019 Road Rally while sitting at the bar "networking"😏 :D (Road Rally luck strikes again!)

I actually bought a bunch of harmonicas from Sweetwater and "learned to play" one for this song lol! I'm especially stoked about this placement coz the synch fee is so big I'm thinking the song will be used prominently!!

I know streaming shows don't pay a lot of backend (and I was given the option to opt out of PRO payments for an upfront lump sum) but I figure streaming payments will catch up to the rest of the industry eventually.

Here's the song "Unholy Water". Have a good Easter weekend! best, John

Congrats Jon

That's great news and a very cool track, really like the production. I'm sure the sync fee will come in very handy around now too.

You'll have to spill the beans on how you got that slightly saturated type sound on the mix.

+1 to what Mark wrote.
Additionally, the word "onomatopoeia" comes to mind (if the spel chic thing corrects me!) - when a word expresses the sound: like "BANG!" or "POW!" - like the old Batman comics.
That's what I hear in this mix - which, from my understanding how prosody is supposed to work: blending lyric & music such that they are in complete complement.
Well done, J.P.
When it's done properly, it's like magic. :? 8-) :P
Your mileage may vary.

Hi Mark and thanks for the kind words! And yes that sync will certainly come in handy.

As far as the saturation on the mix, I'd have to go back into that session to nail it down exactly. But I do know that using Logic Pro's distortion plug-in - I separately distorted my harmonica, Cirrus 5 string bass , my BGV and used on-board Logic plug-ins on the Strats. When I sent it for mastering ( I don't trust my ears for vocal songs) I gave a reference of the band Delta Rae. My mastering guy in Australia has every plug-in and piece of outboard gear under the sun. And he knows how to use them!

Glad you're digging the vibe! Best, John

Hey thanks Peter! I appreciate the nice words!

Prosody is one of the things I strive for in every song I write. If the lyrics don't connect/accentuate the music, groove, beat and melodic rhythm how can I expect someone to invest time in listening? Jai Josephs was very instrumental in driving that home to me at the 2018 Road Rally. I paid extra to do a one on one mentor w him and it really helped to open my eyes and ears.

Hope you're doing well. Best, John

For me, it was the Pat Pattison classes at the RR... I tried not to miss any of his.
I don't think he was there to be one of the teachers at the 2019 conference. Dang it.
Cheers and continued success.

Hey thanks Buzz! I’ve got several more in a similar style that are being pitched to OBX. 🤞
