Voice Changing Software/Hardware

Post by RogerG » Tue Apr 17, 2012 11:07 am

Hi,

Anybody out there know of some kind of VST software for PC's (or hardware though I'd prefer software), that can take your original voice and change the tonal characteristics to make it naturally (that's really important) sound like someone else? (same sex, not trying for the sex change...)

What I'm after is the equivalent of all of the guys in my band singing together. Of course I can multi-track, harmonize, etc but all voices still sound like me (because it is me ) I tried Antares but harmonizing isn't what I'm after and it still sounds like a pitch shifter (i.e. phony) to me. I want to get different sounding male voices.

Unfortunately conflicting schedules have made it pretty difficult to get the true different voices tracked. And paid is fine. I'm not looking for freebies here, I need something exceptional that allows me fast turnaround. Any ideas on software/hardware I should check out?

Thanks again for your help as always. - Roger Gilpin

Roger, there's the melodyne formant tool. It's going to sound like a pitch shifter, because if you don't change the prosody (rhythm, stress, enunciation, accent) there's nothing else it can do. I don't think there is a tool to change a Boston dialect into an Alabama dialect, or a Southern accent into a British accent, you are going to have to help it. I suppose you could impersonate Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Mick Jagger, and with the help of a tool like the formant tool mix them into a chorus.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

@Len - Thanks for the link. I actually have something called v-Vocal which is basically the Sonar version of an auto-tuner. The way the formant works is quite similar to what the youtube video link you gave me showed. I'll try dinking with it some more. Honestly I haven't used that option too often.

@Stuart - Thanks for the link also. Very interesting. I found out Avox 2 is no longer sold. The new version (I guess it's an update, I'm not completely sure) is called Avox Evo. It looks like I'll be doing a lot of demo downloading and experimenting this week... :D

Thanks again. - Roger

The Antares stuff looks interesting. Maybe not the most natural sounding, though.. check out Flux Ircam Trax as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg00-4aUcWI Flux is a French company who makes excellent plug-ins..

Have a look at TC/Helicon's hardware vocal processors. You need something that manipulates formants independently of pitch. "Natural" is a pretty tall order for this kind of processing, but they get better all the time.

Antares's Throat Evo claims to do just that. I think I recall demoing a whole suite of the Antares vocal products. I wasn't particularly impressed. Most of it sounded too fake to me, but possibly if you're putting a few tracks of your "regular" voice up front and then put some of the fake voices a little bit behind yours, it just might be passable.
