Wavelore Glide II - Convincing dobro?

Post by cameron » Thu Apr 25, 2013 12:03 am

If you get a chance, please check out the intro and 3rd verse and let me know if the dobro sounds realistic to you. It's Wavelore's Glide II VST played from a keyboard. Takes a little retraining of old habits to figure out how to play it, and I'm far from proficient on it yet, but this software is pretty impressive! Even mimics the droan of the open tuning bass note whenever the slide is lifted off the strings.

I'm a little confused because they have both resonator guitar (acoustic dobro) and "slide guitar" (electric) versions, and this is supposedly the electric version, but it sounds like a dobro to me. It'll do a lap steel sound too though.

I posted this same song last week, sans dobro. I think we got all the timing issues fixed, with thanks to all those who helped me out.

Sounds good to me Cam.

if you hadn't mentioned it I would have accepted it for what it is supposed to be.

Michael.

Sounds pretty good! Jerry Douglas will be pissed! You know it is amazing how software is putting musicians out of ( AND INTO ) business.

Ok, that's good news. Thank you both! It sounded pretty good to me, but I'm the guy that previously missed that the drum quantization was off for the whole freakin' song, haha! I still have a couple spots to fix where I was competing with the vocals, but I wanted to see if my sound was convincing enough before I started sweating the details.

I've been waiting for a product like this for a couple years now. Friggin' amazing!! Their website is wavelore.com if anyone is interested.

Yeah Cam, this tune is coming along nicely! Virtual dobro sounds pretty good, I'd still like to hear the drums dried up a bit and maybe take a bit of the bite out of the highs in the drums as well, just to make them a bit more idiomatic to the vibe.

Nice one Cam!

Hi
This is probably not relevant, but may I? I really like the song and your voice. You evoke a real sincerity with your deliverance. If I was producing this though... I'd go SO minimal. I'd love to hear this touching song done with voice and acoustic. Nothing else. Performed like it would be in someone's kitchen (on a farm somewhere...you get the idea). To me it cries out to be organic.. real. dobra sounds great but I'd go old school Lumineers; raw.

Good song

I sorta agree with Graham. I would suggest paring down the production quite a bit as well. That might make those tasty little licks more relevant if they were sprinkled here and there in the tune.

Hello Cam.
I love what you are doing here, but also like Graham's idea on this one.
A voice and an acoustic guitar with a smattering of tasty dobro slides, for me would add space to the mood of the piece.
I play Dobro and what I hear sounds convincing ( listening on cans - Beyer DT150 )
All the best

Thanks Ethan, Graham and Steve x 2! I'm really pleased to hear that the dobro is convincing, even to a dobro player!

I'm probably not going to strip this one down at this point, but I did remove dobro from the 1st verse as I think the instrumentation was getting a bit busy. I might try doing another simple demo as you've suggested. I can see how it might work better for film/TV soundtracks that way.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi Cam,

I'd be very interested to know what your experience was like getting your copy of Glide II. I'm glad you were able to get the software which I understand is uniformly excellent, but I was curious to find out what difficulties (if any) you might have encountered.

On Sep. 1 2012, I ordered American Zither from that website without first looking on their forum. If I had, I would've discovered that no one was getting the products they ordered & paid for. My experience has been no different. I paid by credit card for which I have a receipt. All I needed was a download link. 8 months & multiple emails later I have yet to hear anything back. You can confirm this issue existed on the Wavelore & NI Kontakt forums http://www.native-instruments.com/forum ... p?t=176460 & there's nothing current there to indicate that anyone ever got any satisfaction with the exception of one or two who sic'd Paypal on Mark Belbin, the owner.

Perhaps you could shed some light on the subject that would indicate that the situation has improved in some way. Did you have to do anything special to get your product delivered? Did you experience any delays or other problems? Some people still think highly of Mark Belbin but, at this point, given the problems I've experienced, I could never recommend Wavelore to anyone.

Sorry to vent,
Mike
