A 50% pay cut for writers might help keep the library out of the hole, but who do the writers at the bottom of the food chain squeeze? It is indeed a worrying precedent that I hope goes the same way as the Discovery Channel saga.
Graham (UK). Still composing a little faster than decomposing, and 100% HI.

A lot of libraries will struggle now, as production lines are down. They will try to squeeze the lemon all they can. Don't fall for it, because then you will fall..

Would this in many cases translate to half the income for the artist?
Yep, exactly. I hope writers for this library don’t take this. Unfortunately some will

Right. In the short term this library may stay afloat or prosper with the additional revenue.
But in the long term if other libraries follow this misguided practice, everyone will be back on a level playing field- except with sharply reduced revenue.

Well said. I think this needs to be addressed during the virtual Road Rally in November. Many newly signed composers may fall for this ploy because they don’t know better, or just to get a foot in the door.

Taxi screens the libraries they work with, and do all they can. I don’t think they can go out and tell what libraries should do and not do. Their job is to feed reputable libraries, supervisors and other clients with great music. But I feel confident that Taxi won’t feed us to any lions.

Yes, I agree that Taxi won’t do business with non-reputable entities. ML does a great job weeding out the chaff.

I guess my point is some ppl may not be aware of this practice and may mistakenly think it’s status quo. I’m hoping we can do our part to educate and possibly slow down the spread of this business model..

Should you sign with a music library who takes 50% of the writer’s share? It depends.....

yeah basically they are saying -
we'll take 100% of the publishing share
AND
we'll take 50% of the writing share
leaving the artist with only a 25% share in the track
and that's before any cowriting splits ;)

Let me put it this way.. I'd rather drown in the gutter while rats eat me half alive, than sign away my writers share.
