What Are Good Headphones for new Home Studio

I am looking at starting my own amateur home studio in the fall but I'm having some trouble deciding on good headphones to use. A few quick questions:

1) As a beginner, what kinds of headphones can you recommend that are both great in quality and long-lasting (I don't want to have to keep upgrading to a new pair every year)? (My budget is ~ $200)

2) The studio room will likely not have any sound-reduction padding for quite a while, is it worth it to get a good set of headphones as opposed to monitors?

I am in my second year of University, so although I don't have all day to be spending time learning the fundamentals of mixing and recording, I do plan on taking this seriously over the next four years.

Any suggestions?

The akg have replaceable ear pads and cords. Many pro types do.

Many softwares also have a student discount, so don't forget to use it if you need to.

Akg, beyerdynamic, sony, audio-tchnica...

there are different types, open, semi-open, closed. open for reference monitoring, closed for singing monitor, to prevent headphone bleed into mic. You could buy one of each type and still be under budget.

Hi,
I just purchased a pair of Koss's reissue of their Pro4AA headphones. They are made well, and sound balanced. They are built well with metal parts not plastic. Koss also has a good warantee on their headphones. I read some posts on the Koss site where people commented on the service they received for repairing / replacing damaged Pro4AA phones. Some had headphones from the 1970 & 80's that got refurbished under warantee.

The build quality means they will last and can take bumps and drops of usage. They also have a lighter version of these headphones, with more plastic and less metal parts. Both of these should be in your buget range. You can check the spec's on the Koss web site.

I've used these for severeal years, and can recommend them.

They are very flat, and translates really well to other systems in my experience. They are also great for the occational bass check, when you use nearfields in the room.
They can be a little uncomfortable, though, but you can upgrade them with earpads from their higher range models.

I use Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's. They seem flat and I can hear the low end. not a replacement for a sub. you need headphones to check stuff like instrument placement and reverb etc.
